Saying good-bye.
We lost our little "grandpuppy" Abbie, a fawn and white colored Chihuahua, on Thursday. She was 12 and died suddenly with no warning. She was always the center of attention at family gatherings or with anyone visiting--she seemed to think they came just to see her. Our whole family is so sad. She usually came to our house when her people were traveling or vacationing. Most recently she spent part of July with us. She would sit on our laps with her eyes glued to the window waiting, waiting.

A Harvey rescue of a Chihuahua Rescue
Many people support the rescue services of specific dog breeds, especially when one breed becomes popular and then people lose interest and discover a Great Dane doesn't work well in a one bedroom apartment. I don't know the source of this photo, but it looks like this Good Sam has picked up a boat load from a Chihuahua Rescue. (Website of a California rescue.) There are some "deer heads" (like our little Abby), "apple heads" (sort of a pug nose), long hair, short hair, and mixed breed. All sizes. But bless this guy who apparently took them out of the rain and flooding--and I'm sure they are grateful, but shivering more than usual. In 2005 was blogging about Jinky The Hollywood Dog who was a long hair Chihuahua mix rescue with a lot of personality.

Cute Chihuahua mixes
I read through one of those dog breed lists (20 breeds that live the longest) today and noticed a number were "designer dogs" particular Chihuahua mixes/hybrids. This is not the site, but is one about Chihuahuas.

Man attacks bear to save his Chihuahua
“I hit him with an overhand right—and hard,” Moore said. “His head snapped around, and he stumbled. I’m a 192-pound, 6-foot-2½ man, and the bear outweighed me, but I was taller.”
The septuagenarian slugger said his fist landed “right in the jaw, right below his eye and part of his snout.”
Six pounds is a big Chihuahua.

Little pets
A Rhinoceros Beetle from Costa Rica can reach the size of 6.75 inches. That’s a horn in the front. They are harmless, I’m told.
And then there’s my grand puppy, Abby, a Chihuahua, dressed for Buckeye football.

The itty-bitty buckeye
My daughter's Chihuahua doesn't think her buckeye sweater is the least bit cute. She couldn't wait to get out of it. A buckeye, for you non-Ohio readers, is an Ohio State fan, and my daughter and son-in-law are definitely that.We are doing a few trial runs before November when they go to Las Vegas, and we puppy-sit. Our cat is not pleased, no not one bit. Our cat is 7 lbs., the dog about half that, but oh, she so wants to be friends with the big pussy cat. Not going to happen.

I've never known any dog that didn't bark when I walked up to a door. My son's huge (Mom, she's just a puppy) Lab barks. A lot.
Get a Chihuahua?
A friend stopped to chat at Panera's and she told me she hadn't been to Bible study recently because she was taking advantage of the good weather to work in her yard (on Saturdays). Part of her yard problem was her dogs. Three Goldens. Big. Dogs. Eat. Poop. "But I feel so safe," she said. Well, Bottom Line Newsletter (Winter 2007) says one of the myths about safety is having a big dog. Most big dogs are not barkers. What is needed are small dogs that make a lot of noise, like Chihuahuas.I've never known any dog that didn't bark when I walked up to a door. My son's huge (Mom, she's just a puppy) Lab barks. A lot.
