The Friday Foreign Affairs Forum at Lakeside

At yesterday's Foreign Affairs Forum one woman said, "I still support President Obama. . . yada, yada" and that in itself didn't surprise me--Lakeside is a highly educated community with progressives retired from university faculties as common as summer flowers and perch sandwiches. But I was tempted to say, "Why? Can you name anything, particularly in foreign affairs, that he has touched that has gone well?" What country where we have national interests is better off than in 2008? We were discussing Gaza, Ukraine, and ISIS. Has he shown leadership there or in Libya, Pakistan, Nigeria, or Somalia? American women get free birth control with bragging rights for the president, and middle eastern women and girls get rape, slavery and beheading. Then he wines and dines African potentates at the White House who suck up American aid for lavish life styles. But I kept quiet. I'm just telling you.

The fighting in Gaza

Hamas is the aggressor.  Its mission statement is to annihilate Israel.  Israel’s mission is to survive as a state, open to Muslims and Christians, but specifically as the homeland of Jews. So why are American leftists supporting Hamas?   Where is our “free press?”  Every news report on the situation begins with a subtle condemnation of Israel couched in words like “some could say,” or “it has been said,” so they can hide behind the weasel words.  Muslims are slaughtering each other through out the middle east, yet they are safe from their brother’s wrath in Israel. Stand up for the truth.  Support Israel.

It’s come to body counts—Hamas lobs hundreds of rockets at Israel which are effectively stopped by the “iron dome.”  Israel selectively targets sites in Gaza, protection is ineffective, so more Palestinians have died than Israelis—many are children.  Does this make the Palestinian cause (the destruction of the Jewish state and all Jews) just?

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Hamas started the conflict on July 8 with about 10,000 rockets. Since then, the militants have fired more than 2,600 rockets and mortars toward Israel and Israeli forces have destroyed about 3,000, estimated Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, IDF's spokesman. Footage of Mavi Marmara Passengers Attacking IDF Soldiers

Although most of the "volunteers" and "passengers" were Turkish, about 15 countries were represented, including 16 people from the USA. I hope our government has a record of them--you know, the proper documents that we all have to show when involved in a crime. Israel is very touchy about passports, so I'm sure they were examined closely before they released them and sent them packing.

"The Israeli prime minister's office announced that all foreigners from the flotilla who were detained would be released and deported by sometime on Thursday. There were about 600 activists on the six ships." CNN

My Friend ERMA

United States Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance Fund was authorized by President Obama after one week in office to furnish assistance under the Act in an amount not to exceed $20.3 million from the United States Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance Fund for the purpose of meeting unexpected and urgent refugee and migration needs, including by contributions to international, governmental, and nongovernmental organizations and payment of administrative expenses of Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration of the Department of State, related to humanitarian needs of Palestinian refugees and conflict victims in Gaza. Federal Register, January 27, 2009"

Big Gay Al wonders how he missed it on the national news. Yeah, I wonder. Obviously, someone had that ready for his desk before he took his hand off the Bible.

So I went over to the ERMA website to see what else was going on, and why this was such a rush job.
Of the $20.3 million in new ERMA funds, $13.5 million will go to the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), $6 million to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and $800,000 to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). . .

Today’s [January 30] contribution to UNRWA augments the $85 million the United States contributed in December 2008 toward UNRWA’s 2009 appeals. Of that amount, $25 million supported UNRWA emergency operations in West Bank and Gaza. The remaining $60 million supported UNRWA’s services for 4.6 million Palestinian refugees in the region, including Gaza. . .

Furthermore, today’s contribution to ICRC complements the $9.7 million the United States provided earlier this month for ICRC’s activities for victims of conflict in the Middle East, with particular attention to its critical programs in Gaza. . . In addition to our contributions to UNRWA, ICRC, and OCHO, to date, USAID has provided more than $3.7 million for emergency assistance to Gaza."
And does the US give Israel a lot. Oh yes. Billions. Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. However, when I tried to find a reliable source, all I found was hate Israel pro-Palestine sites (well, the first 20 or so). As with most problems in the middle east, it depends on your politics. Maybe the press didn't mention it because Bush gave more in December and they didn't want Obama to look like a piker?

Moral clarity

It's not always possible to know right and wrong, especially not on the international scene. But on the current (and on going) Israel-Hamas conflict, Charles Krauthammer says we know:
"Some geopolitical conflicts are morally complicated. The Israel-Gaza war is not. It possesses a moral clarity not only rare but excruciating.

Israel is so scrupulous about civilian life that, risking the element of surprise, it contacts enemy noncombatants in advance to warn them of approaching danger. Hamas, which started this conflict with unrelenting rocket and mortar attacks on unarmed Israelis - 6,464 launched from Gaza in the past three years - deliberately places its weapons in and near the homes of its own people. . . For Hamas the only thing more prized than dead Jews are dead Palestinians." Link
What a dilemma for Obama. He has something Bush never had--adoring, sycophant followers who are expecting the 2nd coming of American popularity throughout the world. That will only happen if he abandons Israel. Someone is in for a terrible fall--and I'm guessing it's the Jews and Catholics who supported him thinking that all his marxist leanings would disappear after November 4 and we'd all sing glory, glory, alleluia to the new king as we marched blindfolded into the sunrise to our reeducation camps.
