October by Robert Frost

Since it's October 1, I thought I'd post the October poem by Robert Frost, but some critic spoiled my plan by reminding the reader that Frost was writing about death. It's the crows. When poets write about crows, says the critic, that tells you death is coming. But critics know that, and I didn't.

So let's just go with face value of the poem. The rows of maples on Henderson and McCoy have just a touch of gold this morning. Always sad to see since we know what coming, but thankful for the beauty.

"Taken at face value, this poem speaks, with a simple elegance, of the unique beauty of a crisp October morning. With an attention to detail that is characteristic of Frost, the poem carefully lays out the scene: just a quiet morning in early October. The air is silent, “hushed” even, but for the distant sound of crows. Multicolored leaves paint the ground in bright colors-red and gold and brown. A simple scene, rendered instantly familiar to any New Englander. Who would think to look any further?"

I checked my blog, and I've written 3 other posts about Robert Frost. I’m old enough to have actually attended a poetry reading by Robert Frost, one of the 20th century’s most famous and favorite poets, when I was a student at the University of Illinois. (He died in 1963.) My date that night was someone I'd met at Chinese Student Club, and I'm not sure if he understood anything, but he was polite and listened carefully. My roommate Dora Lee was Chinese (her family escaped from Communist China) which is why I attended Chinese Student Club.

The poem ends with grapes.  Isn't that nice?   A symbol for communion for Christians, although I doubt Frost of thinking in that direction.

Serendipity trivia:  While I was looking for a photo of Frost at the U. of I. on the internet, I took my 1959 Illio (yearbook) off the shelf.  It didn't have a good table of contents or index for special events so I started leafing through it.  I saw a photo of students at the first football game packed in like sardines, and there were two women from my house, McKinley Hall, Sandra McArthur and Mary Jo Brodd.  I also attended that game (got sick which is why I remember), so I studied it pretty carefully to see if we might have had a block of tickets, but I didn't see me.

October's bright blue weather

"I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.  It would be terrible if we just skipped from September to November wouldn't it?  Anne of Green Gables.  Yesterday's blue skies have turned to grey and the tiny yellow leaves of the locust tree outside my window are twirling like golden snow. 

O suns and skies and clouds of June, 

And flowers of June together, 

Ye cannot rival for one hour 

October's bright blue weather.

And today October 3 is Respect Life Sunday.  From the tiniest unborn to the oldest person in a care facility or in your own home, respect life.  You were once that little one and you will someday be frail in need of tender care.

We will soon be welcoming a great-great nephew (grandson of our niece) and would wish all children could be so celebrated.

Domestic Violence

"On Friday, the president issued the proclamation of October 2019 as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In the official statement, he said, “Domestic violence erodes this environment, leaving many Americans in potentially life-threatening situations. As a Nation, we must resolve to have zero tolerance for acts of domestic violence.” He added that, over the past fiscal year, the administration has made $8 billion available to provide aid and service to victims and survivors, “These services assist more than 2 million domestic violence victims annually, helping individuals and families heal from physical and psychological wounds.”

He concluded, “This month, we strengthen our resolve to ensure homes are places of refuge, comfort, and protection — and not places of fear and abuse. We renew our commitment to support and protect victims, hold perpetrators accountable, and prevent violence before it starts. We strive to eliminate domestic violence in all its horrific forms in order to sustain the hope of a better life for victims and to foster safer homes and relationships for all Americans.”" Daily Prayer Briefing.

In 1989 Congress passed Public Law 101-112, officially designating October of that year as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Such legislation has been passed each year since. Although most of the violence is against women, 1/4 is against men, and somewhere I read that the rate of domestic violence is the highest in lesbian relationships (mainly psychological and verbal). Statistics on this seem quite squishy to me, with "intimate partner" or "dating" apparently folded into "domestic" (which implies sharing a residence). One site pointed out more women were victims of homicide (domestic violence) than all the lives lost by our military in the middle east wars.
