Summer School of Faith, 2025

2025 Summer School of Faith: Ancient Faith and Modern Wisdom--How Neglected Doctrines Provide Guidance and Hope for Today

These were the first words uttered by Jesus Christ, as recorded in the earliest gospel written.:
"This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” (Mark, Chapter 1:15

REPENT WHAT? BELIEVE WHAT? HOPE FOR WHAT? FIND OUT.

St. Mary's Summer School of Faith 2023 with Charles Craigmile

I'm a huge fan of Charles Craigmile's theology classes, and have followed him about 10 years now.  I'm usually a little behind. I just found the 2023 list of classes, but haven't watched them yet.  I wish St. Mary's would put the classes on a podcast, although he also has good visuals.

In 2023, Charles Craigmile presented a series of sessions at St. Mary’s in Lake Forest as part of their Adult Education program1. The sessions covered various topics related to the Catholic faith and were held weekly on Tuesday nights. Here are some of the topics that were covered:

Summer School of Faith 2022, Vatican II

This would have been the 10th year of this series, however it didn't meet in 2020 because of Covid.  It is excellent, and Charles Craigmile is always interesting and entertaining.

Summer School of Faith, Part 1, 2022

Each year I try to watch Charles Craigmile's Summer School of Faith. This year the topic is, Vatican II, 60 Years Later. This is the 10th year, although they probably didn't meet in 2020. https://youtu.be/Zb19B8uHOTU . I enjoy his style, humor, and excellent sources. He is not a Catholic priest, he's a business man, but he did go to seminary. The first part is Dei Verbum (Persons and Propositions). Because we're Lutherans, whenever I hear history or culture or arts and entertainment discussed by Craigmile, I'm again reminded of the librarian's phrase, "to the victor belong the archives." Everything in our culture is taught and told and discussed from a Protestant viewpoint. The statistics he presents applies to all our lives and he points out that the changes of the 60s were already in place and not a result of Vatican II. The huge drop in religious orders, in attendance and in respect had already begun by the 60s. He says from a demonic view, if you're going to destroy and army, you start with the infantry. Baptisms and marriages have both dropped over 50% in the last 60 years. Interestingly the stats he gives for clergy abuse for the 1970s show those men (mostly homosexuals) had been ordained to the church much earlier than the 1970s--the 50s, so Vatican II standards weren't to blame. When Craigmile uses the word "church" he means of course, the Roman Catholic Church, however, if you've been attending any Christian church for the last 60 years, you'll recognize the cultural tsunami of changes he discusses many of which are societal, and affecting us all.

Summer school of Faith, 2019

I've been following Charles Craigmile's  summer lectures for 5 or 6 years. This summer's program will address many of the issues facing us in our culture. He's interesting, has a sense of humor, and is well prepared. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcS6WXVr6GU  He's not a priest, pastor or professor, and instead is a businessman. I've watched the first lecture--outstanding, and the 2nd is on line, they will be off during July 4 week.

First week:  Many anniversaries in 2018. End of WWI in 1918.  Czar in Russia and family assassinated.  200th anniversary of Karl Marx’s birth. We have a sense our culture is in crisis. Catholics are experiencing closings of schools, hospitals, shortage of priests.
Uses “Introduction to Christianity” by Cardinal Ratzinger (Benedict XVI)

Week 2 uses Genesis—a radical text.

Week 3, the liturgy and mass, true worship of God

Week 4, The church, the call to communion, uses Ratzinger’s 1991 book, “Called to Communion,” compilation of his speeches

Week 5, Death. Uses “Eschatology,” 1997, by Ratzinger, his last major work as a theologian. The Kingdom of God is the fundamental teaching of Jesus—it is Christ. Eternal life starts now.  The door to mercy is through repentance.

Graigmile back for a 6th season in 2018

You don’t need to be Catholic to appreciate the excellent program offered in the summer by The Church of  St. Mary in Lake Forest, Illinois by Charles Craigmile.  He is a theologian turned businessman.  I’ve watched them all.  This season is about the culture and relies on the work of Pope Benedict, “Culture Lost, Culture Reclaimed: The Catholic Renewal.” 50 years ago the Pope wrote “Introduction to Christianity” (as Cardinal Ratzinger). 2018 is also the 50th anniversary of Humanae Vitae, http://w2.vatican.va/content/paul-vi/en/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-vi_enc_25071968_humanae-vitae.html and the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI.  Also the 200th anniversary of the birth of Karl Marx.

“Lecturer Charles H. Craigmile holds an undergraduate degree in philosophy, with minors in Latin and Greek from the University of St. Thomas, an MA in philosophy from DePaul University, and an MBA from JL Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Charles has also completed three-years’ course work toward a graduate degree in Theology at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein. Over the last 25 years, Charles has taught Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) programs across the Chicago area and led summer programs in recent years at Church of Saint Mary in Lake Forest. He is president and CEO of Revenova, LLC, the leading Cloud-based Transportation Management Application built on the Salesforce.com platform. Previously, he was president and CEO of Forseva which he sold to Equifax in 2014.” (From 2014 story in Daily North Shore)

The Didache--an ancient message for today

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_w7OApgi1I

The Didache is a record of the early days of the Christian church in the first century A.D.  Some scholars put it as early as 50 A.D. It refers to false apostles and prophets, and how to determine who is authentic. Concerns basic morality, the sacraments, and a bit about end times.
"Lost for centuries, the Didache was discovered in a Greek manuscript at Constantinople in 1873, and published by Bryennius ten years later.  Two small Greek fragents have since been published from two leaves of a parchment manuscript found at Oxyrhynchus, and a longer Coptic frangment in the British Museum was published in 1924.  Two extracts in Ethiopic also have come to light, and a Georgian version. "
The Apostolic Fathers, an American Translation, Edgar J. Goodspeed, Harper, 1950. p. 10.  I own this book--bought it about 30 years ago at a book sale.
The early church knew these prohibitions which the 21st century church has forgotten. . .

Chapter 2, 1-7:  The second command of the Teaching is:  You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not corrupt boys (pederasty), you shall not commit fornication, you shall not steal, you shall not practice magic, you shall not use enchantments, you shall not murder a child by abortion, or kill one when born.  You shall not desire your neighbor's goods, you shall not commit perjury, you shall not bear false witness, you shall not speak evil, you shall not hold a grudge.  You shall not be double-minded, nor double-tongued, for the double tongue is a deadly snare.  Your speech shall not be false or vain, but fulfilled in action.  You shall not be covetous or rapacious, or a hypocrite or malicious or proud.  You shall not entertain an evil design against your neighbor.  You shall not hate any man, but some you shall reprove, and for some you shall pray, and some you shall love more than your life."

In Chapter 15 "bishops and deacons" in this translation are "overseers and assistants"--obviously a Protestant translation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wb7cNdUMpfA  Biblical Literacy Class recorded 01-18-2015, Mark Lanier, a Houston lawyer who "teaches regular classes at Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, Texas on Biblical Literacy that are also posted on the Internet in video, audio, and written formats. Lanier and his family built the Lanier Theological Library, one of the world's largest private religious studies library open for public usage." (Wikipedia)  I just came across this video today looking for material on the Didache and will look at this archive more carefully.  He recommends Aaron Milovec translation.

This is one of my favorite series, St. Mary's, 2014 lectures on the early church fathers, by Charles Craigmile. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56_oKrRAtZw  and the Didache section starts about 32 minutes. 2015 series is on Catholic Social Teaching. 2016 is on Christian Apologetics: Overcoming Secular Barriers to Faith.

Fourth Annual Summer School of Faith, 2016

All Christians, whether or not Catholic, have a wonderful opportunity for instruction in the faith taught by Charles Craigmile, previously president and CEO of Forseva which he sold to Equifax in 2014.and now CEO of Revenova   and philosopher at the Church of St. Mary, Lombard, Illinois.  The first year was the catechism, second was the first 500 years and Fathers of the Church,  third Catholic Social Teachings  and now in 2016 "Christian Apologetics for the 21st Century--Overcoming Modern Barriers to Faith."  It covers secularism with emphasis on Stephen Hawking and his book The Grand Design (2010), which I'm actually watching for the third time, evidence for God in physics and metaphysics, whether religion is inherently dangerous as a basis for society, the proper understanding of the Bible, and the dictatorship of relativism vs. true Christian faith. It's like having a college course taught by a youthful professor with a good sense of humor, but because it's on YouTube you can pause and review what the professor just said. Not only was I in college 50+ years ago, but I had no philosophy or religion in college or high school. Also, since I've been a Lutheran since 1976, I've had no church teaching or history between the letters of Paul and the break with Rome in 1516.

Mr. Craigmile's LinkedIn page: DePaul University, MA, Philosophy, 1987 – 1989; University of St. Thomas, University of St. Thomas, BA, Philosophy, Latin and Greek, 1981 – 1985. He's currently President and Chief Executive Officer at Revenova LLC of Chicago.

Lectures on the Church Fathers

This morning while exercising I listened to lecture 8, St. John of Damascus, series on Early Church Fathers, held at St. Mary's Summer School in Lake Forest, IL in 2014. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBAJoXfXZl8 The lecturer, who is not a priest or deacon but a business man, is so good, I listened to all 8.  Then I find there was another series in 2015, which I'll have to look at.
