Hilltop Lutheran Church, gone but not forgotten
Today we'll be attending our final noon Advent/worship/lunch service at our church, Upper Arlington Lutheran Church, UALC. I had a few minutes last Thursday and put my coat and purse down in a pew near the front and noticed something I hadn't seen before. Hymnals with a red stamp on the top edge from Hilltop Lutheran Church (west side of Columbus) that used to be part of UALC, but which is now Veritas Community Church. I walked between several pews and checked the hymnals and the memorial plates inside--each had been purchased and plated long ago. Those hymnals (green, Lutheran Book of Worship) came out about 1978. Some were dedicated to deceased parents, or an anniversary or a member of a women's circle. I didn't recognize any names. I saw Becki our congregational care staff member who also selects the hymns we use for worship and asked her about it. She said that so many of our hymnals were worn out that we used the LBW from that building when it was moved to another congregation. Sitting there I felt I'd been joined by a whole congregation that had never worshipped in our building.

The long good-bye
We worshipped at the lovely Hilltop Lutheran today; enjoyed Pastor Paul's final sermon there and also his playing the organ. He is retiring at the end of the month and is preaching at different locations. It is one of the 3 campuses of our church, Upper Arlington Lutheran, but it had probably been 5 years since we'd visited. A warm and friendly congregation, 12 South Terrace, Columbus, OH 43204.
Paul and June came to UALC in 1973 after 4 years in Minneapolis right out of seminary, and we joined in 1974, so we’ve had a long time together. He left for awhile (8 years?) to pastor a church in Illinois, but came back as associate, and then became the senior pastor about 11 years ago.

Paul came to the hospital in 1988 when our daughter was in a serious automobile accident and was with us when she had her cancer surgery in 1996. He officiated at our son’s wedding in 1999. He’s preached more funeral sermons than I want to recall. So, 40 years is a long time.
We also worshipped earlier at our Lytham Road campus, where we had flowers on the alter for our 53rd wedding anniversary. Now we have them on the deck so we can see them through the dining room window.

Hilltop Lutheran
Although I’ve expressed some concern about our church’s relationship with the federal government through faith based initiatives, I have no reservations about our unordained (non-ordained?) pastor at Hilltop Lutheran and navigating around the rules of ELCA. He has a heart for Jesus and the people living in the neighborhood. Hilltop Lutheran serves a "transitional" community which 50 years ago was thriving and middle-class. Most of its members had moved to the suburbs. It became part of Upper Arlington Lutheran Church six years ago.- Hilltop‘s unorthodox mix also includes an unordained spiritual leader, Steve Scott, 51, a former lawyer. In the 70s, he worked with Young Life, an urban ministry for high-school students. He began preaching at the church two years ago and became its minister in November because of a "compelling sense that it‘s the right thing to do," he said. He can‘t perform marriages but can do most other pastoral duties. Full story in the Columbus Dispatch
