Transparency in salaries

ABC is reporting on a new "transparency" movement on salaries led in part by a Tik Tok spox/influencer. I heard the usual, especially POC and pay gap. However, unless you also ask about benefits and history with the company, it's meaningless. Elementary school teachers, look it up, make about $75/hour according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics if you factor in benefits. And it's much higher for those in administrative positions. Nothing makes people more unhappy than saying teaching is one of the best paying professions in the U.S. Also, government workers, which are heavily female and black, make far more than the private sector. Total benefit costs consist of five major categories and include 18 benefit costs:
• Paid leave - vacation, holiday, sick, and personal leave;
• Supplemental pay - overtime and premium, shift differentials, and nonproduction bonuses;
• Insurance - life, health, short-term and long-term disability;
• Retirement and savings - defined benefit and defined contribution; and

Look specifically at Table 2 and Table 3 by occupational group. If BLS is wrong about teachers, then it's also wrong about accountants and truck drivers.

That said, I think teaching is one of the most difficult and important jobs; it's just too bad that their union leaders are such crooks.

The Obama administration is the least transparent of any in history according to the Associated Press--hardly a right wing fanatic. But then, are people even surprised at this? It was a campaign promise thrown out to his gullible supporters.

Longest "failure to report" I've seen

When people report their research in JAMA, they are required to include any compensation or financial gain they might have received that could conceivably influence the outcomes. There was an article on obesity published in February on gastric banding in adolescents vs lifestyle intervention by Dr.Paul E. O'Brien of Australia. It seems the gastric banding group won. But in the June 16 issue, there is the "correction" for the financial disclosure agreement, he having said he had no conflicts of interest. I'd say it was a big one.

1. He received compensation as the Natioal medical director of the American Institute of Gastric Banding.
2. He's written a patient information book on the topic from which he derives financial benefits.
3. In another study on obesity he had grants from an obesity research center, of which he is the director.
4. He "inaccurately reported" (i.e., lied) about compensation received as a speaker.
5. He regrets any lack of transparency that his failure may have created.

I think this guy has a future in politics. Also, it shows JAMA really doesn't check much on this stuff.

Where is the transparency?

Not that we knuckle dragging, AGW skeptics and right wing wackos believed that campaign promised, but since he made it and continues to spout it as though it were actually happening, he should be held to it.

Obama met with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer in the Oval Office [yesterday] and with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin joining via telephone.

Although they did not share the details of the meeting, Obama and top Democrats are expected to use informal, back-room negotiations to get a final bill without using the conference committee process.

That's because the process opens up the pro-abortion health care bill to more filibuster attempts in the Senate that could see the defeat of the legislation or postponing it long enough that it can't be approved.

The process has come under fire from Republicans and pro-life advocates and even CSPAN got involved in the debate by sending a letter asking to cover the conference committee. Life News

And how about that EPA? Actually it is being very transparent--it's just by-passing our elected members of Congress right out in the open. Maybe that's the kind of transparency he really meant? Just openly by-pass the federal laws? Miniscule regulatory poo-bah Czars have enormous power in all areas of our lives, and it didn't start with the current administration.

Let's give Congress one more chance to show a spine and support Republican state senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts against the Democratic flunky to replace Ted Kennedy. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in the state finds AG Martha Coakley (huge support from ACORN) ahead of Brown 50% to 41%, but among "certain voters" he's within two points.

A year after the promised transparency

White House dot gov yesterday, when everyone was focused on the crotch bomber or leaving the office for a 4 day week-end, another 25,000 new WH visitor list were posted for Sept 16-30. It was announced on Sept. 4, and this list appeared on December 30. It's pretty tedious to look through (like the e-mails of climategate), and by the time you're finished reading all the times the words "historic commitment," "unprecedented transparency," "milestones in transparency," and "transparency initiatives" the phrases begin to sound a bit hollow, PR-ish, and oh so campaign trail. Well, they promised December, they didn't say when, or how much. Who knew everyone who walked through as a tourist would be included with SEIU reps, CEOs of banks and equity firms and hundreds of lobbyists (apparently they are OK as long as they are "transparent"). Looks like more of the same MO--overwhelm us with information and then strike when the public is flat out gob smacked. While we look at all the energy CEOs' visits, they'll sneak cap and trade or amnesty for illegals in.

Further research shows that Goldman Sach's CEO Lloyd Blankfein pretty much spent the entire day at the White House on October 29. He met with the president twice that day (one meeting had 119 attendees the other 16). On that day he also met one-on-one with Larry Summers. He also met one-on-one with Summers on February 4.

On October 29, Jamie Dimon met with the president twice, it appears in the same meetings as Blankfein. He also met on that day with Larry Summers but with another person present. He also met one-on-one with Rahm Emanuel that day, something Blankfein did not get to do.

Steven Rattner, who for a time ran the government's auto task force and is co-founder of the investment firm, Quadrangle Group, met with Larry Summers over 25 times.

Microsoft's Steve Ballmer met with Summers once. George Soros met with Summers in February.

While SEIU President Andy Stern doesn't show up on the visitors list this time, after topping it last time, his top assistant Anna Burger met with the President 10 times.

Leo Gerard, president of the United Steelworkers, met with the President 4 times.

In addition to his many meetings with Larry Summers, Steve Rattner met with the President twice.

David Rubenstein co-founder of the private equity firm, Carlyle Group, was in the 119 attendee meeting with Lloyd Blankfein and Jamie Dimon, when they met with the president.

Daniel Weiss, Senior Fellow and the Director of Climate Strategy, for the George Soros front group, Center for American Progress, visited with the President (in large groups) 4 times.

Obama labor appointee needs a hearing

Time to e-mail your senator. Here’s an appointment that needs some old fashioned, Obama-promised transparency. Craig Becker, Associate General Counsel to both the Service Employees International Union, the joined at the hip ACORN twin, and the American Federation of Labor & Congress of Industrial Organizations. Obama has appointed him to the 5 member National Labor Relations Board. According to an op ed in today’s WSJ, in a 1993 Minnesota Law Review article, written when he was a UCLA professor, Mr. Becker argued for rewriting current union-election rules in favor of labor. And he suggested the NLRB could do this by regulatory fiat, without a vote of Congress. So it’s clear what he plans to do, and why Obama wants him on that board. More power for the executive branch, less for our elected Congress.

Mr. Labor Lobby Becker is very evasive about his role on Obama’s transition team and just which parts of executive orders he researched and authored while still in the employ of SEIU. He also has ties to Blagojevich. His open mindedness on labor issues will be about as wide and deep as Obama’s transparency--zilch, nada, zip.

Today's new word is PELLUCID

It's a synonym for transparent, another word I thought I knew. But English is such a fluid language, full of hope and change. Transparent comes from the Latin word trans meaning through, and parere, to appear, so it has the sense of "appear through." It means sheer, clear, limpid or diaphanous. There is something there, but you can see beyond. Those of you my age may remember that in the 1950s, completely transparent, sheer nylon dresses and blouses were in fashion. Yes, if your grandmother or mother complains about today's revealing short skirts or skimpy, dipping sweater tops showing cleavage created by padded, push-up bras, pull out that old photo album and take a look at what we were wearing in 1953. The idea was to wear lacy, sexy slips or camisoles underneath. Some girls didn't get the message, so instead you might see a rather dirty bra or unshaven armpits under the sheer yellow, pink or white outfit. Not a pretty sight.

And that's what Obama's transparency is--not a pretty sight. Pellucid when used figuratively, means clear to the understanding. And I think it is clear what is happening. He has promised transparency in government. In the vetting of his appointees, it was learned that his choice for Treasury was a tax cheat. He'd been caught once already, paid a fine and back taxes, and then continued with the same behavior. Seems he didn't understand the concept of filing quarterly on estimated income, something we learned how to do as soon as my husband became a sole practitioner. He'd also "misstepped" on paying a domestic servant whose visa had expired. Now transparently contrite, he still thinks he is the man to help the rest of us with our money. So does our President. That's transparency--know ahead of time you've appointed a guy with loosey-goosey ethics so you're not caught off-guard later.

Then there's Mrs. Senator Clinton. Everyone knows the problems with her husband, a type-A bored loose canon, how he still wants to be president, and how he's accepted money from some pretty shady people for his post-presidential years. But to deny her the Secretary of State position, her prize for being decent and not making a fuss, the cost of bringing the PUMAs into the party tent again, would just be silly. But it is transparent.

According to "English Vocabulary Builder" (1937), 7% of grammar school students thought "transparent" meant to conceal, just the opposite of its meaning. Obviously, they were ahead of their time and that misunderstanding caught on. 18% of adults at that time had no idea what "pellucid" meant (and I certainly have never used it), which comes from the same root as Lucifer, lucere.
