Global alarmists have a problem . . . the climate isn’t cooperating

“Antarctic sea ice has grown to a record large extent for a second straight year, baffling scientists seeking to understand why this ice is expanding rather than shrinking in a warming world.

On Saturday, the ice extent reached 19.51 million square kilometers, according to data posted on the National Snow and Ice Data Center Web site. That number bested record high levels set earlier this month and in 2012 (of 19.48 million square kilometers). Records date back to October 1978.

The increasing ice is especially perplexing since the water beneath the ice has warmed, not cooled.”

The IPCC has a dilemma

But there’s a problem. While the climate models confidently predicted that temperatures would maintain an inexorable rise in the 21st century, in fact, although more and more greenhouse gases have been pumped into the atmosphere, the global temperature has resolutely refused to budge.

So the IPCC’s dilemma is this. How can it expect the public to believe that recent warming is mostly manmade when the models on which it has based this claim have been shown to be fatally flawed?

But they are certain anyway . . .

One of the expected conclusions of the report to be released Friday in Stockholm from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) -- the international group that assesses the science related to climate change and its impacts -- is that there's 95% certainty that man-made global warming is real. A 2007 IPCC report put the confidence level at about 90%.

About Seven Revolutions

There's an interesting report available on-line called the Seven Revolutions, or 7 revs for short. Global Strategy Institute - About Seven Revolutions
It is a project led by the Global Strategy Institute at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) to identify and analyze the key policy challenges that policymakers, business figures, and other leaders will face out to the year 2025. It is an effort to promote strategic thinking on the long-term trends that too few leaders take the time to consider. Contributors came from seven universities.

"In exploring the world of 2025, we have identified seven areas of change we expect to be most “revolutionary”:

2.Resource management and environmental stewardship
3.Technological innovation and diffusion
4.The development and dissemination of information and knowledge

The publication of interest to educators (and the ordinary American who has to pay for this) is Educating Globally Competent Citizens; a Toolkit for Teaching Seven Revolutions

Within these "seven revolutionary areas of change" the toolkit suggests 8 subareas of knowledge, 7 subareas of skills, and 7 subareas of attitudes which university students need to be globally aware and change agents. Interesting that none of 22 levels include any expertise in one's own history, culture or language as a goal. The result is that college graduates ideally would be able "describe how one's own culture and history affect one's world view and expections," without any competancy in American history or culture, and "speak a 2nd language," but possibly be tongue tied and illiterate in English.

But where would we be without Think Tanks telling us to look ahead and ignore the past? My own children graduated in the mid-1980s, and because memorizing facts had long ago fallen from favor in public schools, they really didn't know which came first, The Korean War or The Vietnam War, because both were ancient history, and besides who was afraid of Communists? A little knowledge of our negotiated "peace" in 1952 sure would have been helpful in understanding what's going on today between north and south Korea, wouldn't it?

There are literally hundreds of video interviews within the boundaries of this research. I'm currently listening/watching one on "challenges that an aging population poses for developed countries" which could truly induce insomnia--at least in the elderly like me.

The Pelosi Pole Vault

Nancy Pelosi has promised (Jan. 28) that the health care bill written by lobbyists and leftists that Americans don't want will be snuck into other bills.

"We will go through the gate. If the gate is closed, we will go over the fence. If the fence is too high, we will pole vault in. If that doesn't work, we will parachute in. But we are going to get health care reform passed for the American people for their own personal health and economic security and for the important role that it will play in reducing the deficit."

This is not new--think of all the times social programs or other pork have been tacked onto troop funding. She's being honest about what she thinks of the American people for once in her life.

Recently we've seen the EPA just go right around our elected Congress to do their own pole vaulting for Cap and Trade, a boondoggle that will probably give us a higher tax bill than "health care reform." I have difficulty reading the research articles in JAMA, but the social and political stuff isn't too hard. In the January 13 issue (Vol. 303, no. 2) there is an interesting article on "Human, animal, ecosystem health all key to curbing emerging infectious diseases" (p. 117-118). Yes, the 2006 spinach e coli outbreak can be tied to global climate change (OSU researchers found E coli in domestic and wild animals linked to unusual weather conditions contaminating irrigation systems). So at a November conference hosted by the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council it was recommended that we must have new strategies locally, nationally and globally because our surveillance system is inadequate.

Keep an eye on cross fertilization of your tax health dollars and regulations among US Department of Agriculture (USDA), US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the US Agency for International Development (USAID, the National Institute on Environmental Health Services, wildlife management, all universities and research dealing with veterinary medicine, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and "global effort." Cha-Ching. Of course, compared to billions and trillions, an initial investment in this system of $800 million is a drop in the government bucket which has a hole in it. It's those 12 recommendations that came out of the conference that include the World Health Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the Office International des Epizooties and the goal of creating a funding stream that worries me. That and Nancy's pole vaulting skill.

Anthropogenic global climate change

That big word means simply, "human caused,"--it's the same word stem as "anthopology" the study of humans, or "anthopomorphic," giving God human qualities or attributes. Anthropogenic global climate change theories and worries may be the absolute height of ANTHROPOCENTRICITY, the belief that humans are the most significant entity of the universe and everything must be interpreted in terms of our experience, especially science. Are you ready to come down a notch or two.

The human contribution to the greenhouse effect is 0.28%. Ocean biologic activity, volcanoes, decaying plants, animal activity, etc. (none of which we can control) accounts for 4.72%, and 95% of it is caused by water vapor. Feel better now? Less guilty or more helpless? If these stats make you feel more helpless, it's because of your wanting to feel powerful, the root is your anthropocentricity. If you feel less guilty, then you probably suspected all along they were feeding you a load of crap.

And here's some more. The human contribution to sources of CO2 emissions is 3.4%. Nature does the rest--96.6%.

Every region, state and city seems to be writing and passing standards and legislation for either green house gases, or CO2 emissions or both while we the voters watch Dancing with the Stars or cheer the Buckeyes or pull our hair out over the Bengals. Wake up America. They are stealing our country (what we haven't already destroyed with sloth, gambling, pornography, hedonism, and turning away from God) with massive e-regulations you never voted on that will put Kyoto to shame. The EPA is expanding at such a rate, that the head may soon have to fight Hank Paulson to determine who is the most powerful!

Ohio is already loaded with this alternative-save-the-planet stuff, with only lip service being given to the economic advantages of clean coal, which is God's stored sunshine and energy just waiting for us to be grateful. And don't you think the rest of the country isn't eyeing Lake Erie--the next battle over water will make fights over oil look like squabbles on the playground!

The browning of green

Many scientists "who didn’t toe the government line lost their funding, were drummed out of their jobs, found it impossible to publish in crucial journals, discovered that they were pariahs in their academic departments, or were exposed to furious criticism in the press of a sort most research scientists will never encounter, including being compared to Holocaust Deniers by quite mainstream-media figures like Scott Pelley of 60 Minutes. Climate change map

This map, which appeared in JAMA 296:8 and is found on www.sciencesource.com, is supposed to show the possible hazards of global climate change. As you can see, it is Europe. According to the article, the summer of 2003 was the hottest in Europe in 500 years. It used to be very cold in Europe, and warm in Greenland (which is how it got its name).



But wait! The white areas showed no change and the blue areas were cooler, not warmer (the map here is small, but on the larger map, there are many white spaces). To my untrained eye, over half of Europe was cooler or unchanged in 2003. France, however, was very hot. This article was about how epidemiologists can get on the global bandwagon by researching microbial foodborne illnesses, diarrheal illnesses, changing disease patterns during El Nino warmings, incidences of tick borne illnesses due to milder winters, and waterbourne and foodborne illnesses all linked to weather disturbances. Also, more malaria, but then, that's been caused by well-meaning but deadly environmentalists who got DDT off the market so bird egss would be OK. "Think big," they are told. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Global warming and the god complex

This article in Science Daily puzzles me. On the one hand, it says there have been far more drastic changes in temperature in the past in shorter periods of time, but that the current change is happening because of human activity creating greenhouse gases. Huh? Just who was responsible before? If the earth didn't burn to a crisp before, why will it this time?

"Several large international projects have succeeded in drilling ice-cores from the top of the Greenland inland ice through the more than 3 km thick ice sheet. The ice is a frozen archive of the climate of the past, which has been dated back all the way to the previous interglacial Eem-period more than 120.000 years ago.

The ice archive shows that the climate has experienced very severe changes during the glacial period. During the glacial period there were 26 abrupt temperature increases of about 7-10 degrees. These glacial warm periods are named Dansgaard-Oeschger events after the two scientists first observing them.

The global warming we experience presently will cause a temperature increase of perhaps 2-5 degrees in the next century if greenhouse gas emissions continue, researchers claim. This will lead to increased sea levels and more severe weather with terrible consequences. The temperature rise during the glacial period were much larger and happened much faster.

Temperature increased by 10 degrees in less than 50 years with changes to the ocean currents and the whole ecosystem. These changes have caused sea level rises up to perhaps as much as 8 meters and large changes to the vegetation."

The second anniversary: Am I the only one who notices that the same folks who think we pea-brains control the climate are the same ones who thought it was OK to remove food and water from a woman who wasn't sick or dying, just helpless and dependent, and let her starve and dehydrate? Or that it is OK to kill babies because they come at an inconvenient time or have defects and anomalies? Or that it is OK to use human embryos to get grant money for research as long as it is for a worthy cause? Or that it is OK to deprive 3rd world peoples of DDT so that millions of them die, but the bird eggs will be strong? There seems to be a god complex infecting the liberals. And the humility vaccine seems to be in short supply.
