As I watched Biden walk across the stage with hand outstretched to meet the waiting and stronger Xi, I thought, "He doesn't have dementia, he's just a willing puppet/puppy." Pity the USA! Xi builds coal plants, buys up US farmland and makes deals with Africa for an even larger share of rare earth metals (which we need but don't have) while Biden preaches climate change politics at the bidding of his radical left wing. And so far, although they were mostly wearing masks at the table, no one mentioned a lab, a market, or a 1000 day pandemic. Sort of a late spooky Halloween look.

Ohio and coal

God, Satan and the Environmentalists

The coal mine tragedy in West Virginia is in the news. It is already morphing from a story of anxious relatives, grieving co-workers and community to one of the need for more government regulation for safety, and (who knew?), the dangers of fossil fuels. Let's forget for a moment that we Americans could save 2,000 to 3,000 lives a year by just raising the legal driving age to 18; what clout in Washington DC would that have? So whatever the hoopla or spin by the media, it isn't rooted in concern for the lives of the miners and their families and way of life in Appalachia.

Turn the page of the newspaper to the World Bank investing $3.75 billion to finance a coal fired power plant in South Africa. Notice the global spread of personal names and titles--Hitachi Power (Germany), Eskom Holdings (South Africa), the African National Congress, and S. Vijay Iyer (India) of the World Bank. This investment has the support of China, India, Brazil, and the African country members of the World Bank. Not so much the United States, which owns a lot but not enough to fight the rest.

I do love this quote by Mamatho Netsianda (who claims he answers to no white man) of Chancellor House Holdings, the investment arm of the African National Congress, which has a 25% stake in the new coal fired Hitachi Power. "I don't care who our shareholders are--whether it's God, Satan or the ANC--I'm running the company in accordance with South African law." Lucky he doesn't have a part African statist president changing all the rules as he goes along in order to by-pass both the laws of the nation and the power of the Congress at the expense of the shareholders.

Captured CO2

Last week there was a dust storm over Australia that dumped tons of red dust in the ocean. The dust contained nutrients which fed huge blooms of phytoplankton. Those tiny plants provide food for larger ocean creatures. The plankton has captured about 8 million tons of CO2. This will be deposited on the ocean floor. That's one month of emissions from a dirty coal-fired plant in China making energy conserving light bulbs for Americans so they can sit in dim rooms feeling good about themselves for not using American clean coal mined here in Ohio and other Appalachian states providing good jobs. The DC and California greenies don't like the ocean doing the natural CO2 capture and storage primarily because they can't make any money that way or tax it.

And he was right! He said we'd question his plans and results. And he was right! Biden's all over the Ohio northwestern TV stations, spreading it deep and thick. Not only has his administration taken over and destroyed what was left of the auto industry of northern Ohio by giving it to the unions with our tax money, but it is planning to destroy our energy based economy with the phony baloney cap n trade, which will benefit the same rich corporate execs (plus Al Gore) but will destroy local jobs. We've got counties up here with a 17% unemployment rate, compared to about 6% during the 2006 campaign in which Strickland and other Democrats constantly griped about "this economy." Now they want to make it even worse with green pie in the sky and kill the southern half of the state.

Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Kentucky and southern Illinois are all coal states. You know, the "dirty" stuff that has supplied about 90% of your electricity and powers the industries where you work. Now they want to clutter the prairies and lakes with windmills, a very unreliable source of energy, but 3 guesses who will own the stock and who will be trading those credits!

A graphic at Powerline today is worth looking at. It shows the state-by-state annual taxes incurred due to cap-and-trade based on EIA and CBO data. Ohio's new tax bill? $642.5 million annually, following Texas, Indiana, and West Virginia.

Ohio turns out to be the 4th biggest loser, which is fine if you're on reality TV competing with 49 other obese contestants, but this reality is lost jobs, incomes, schools, libraries, parks, highways, and it's big votes for Democrats who always promise a thousand times more than they can deliver, and people fall for it. Just like the FDR era, where they preferred WPA jobs to real jobs. Remember, the P in WPA was changed from Progress to Projects after several years of failure.

pea and poop

Usually I don't worry about spelling and typos on the internet, because everyone dashes something off, and often doesn't take the time to look through. But this one on my site meter was just too cute to pass up.

Now, I don't talk about pea and poop, but I might have noted something I saw at the park that was killing the grass, and we have certainly all been stepping in it as we get closer to the election.

I'm not sure what vegetative matter (peas and poop?) and how much heat it took to make coal, but it's an essential part of the economy of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kentucky. The article in the Dispatch today covering what Sarah Palin said about the most recent outrageous take down of our economy promised by Obama--to bankrupt the coal industry and cause higher electricity costs--with cap and trade so high no one will be able to afford it, didn't even get the quote right. I've listened to it several times and even with his trademark stammer and stutter (off teleprompter) you can clearly hear the word "bankrupt" and his intentions, but the headline is: "Palin charges Obama would cripple Ohio's coal industry." Obama promised he will bankrupt anyone who builds a coal fired plant and the CD writer tries to explain it away.

The media owners of the CD and PD, WaPo and NYT need to get some pre-1990 text books and take a look at what happened to the press after they helped bring in "reform" in Cuba in the 1950s, Russia in the early 20th century, China in the 1940s, Vietnam in the 50s, Korea in the 40s, etc. After the marxist dictator takes power, they are the first to go, next it's the buddies and cronies who still have some backbone and know where the bodies are buried. Go back and read some of those trials from the 1930s in the USSR, like Bukharin's, all those loyal revolutionaries who had sacrificed so much and shed the blood of others for the marxist dream. Then next in line are the unions. Of course, most of those governments, with the exception of North Korea which is still taking food aid for its starving people, have now come full circle and dumped their endless 5 year economic plans built on a million graves and are beating us at our own game. Pea and poop, indeed.

Longing for the 60s

Even boomers hate to grow old and see their star setting (and their pension funds shrinking). Never fear, old Al Gore is here, with the same old 60s agenda and methods, and getting really bold. On Sept. 24 at the Clinton Global Initiative he said, "If you’re a young person, I believe we’ve reached a point of civil disobedience . . . to do things like take down coal plants." Notice, he's not going out to get arrested or his head bashed in by angry locals--nope, wants the young'ns to step up and put the miners and townspeople out of jobs. Just like he doesn't want to reduce the size of his jet or his house, but he wants you to sit in the dark or use funny light bulbs made only in China in their coal factories.

Maybe that's an issue that can be addressed at the debates on Thursday.

"Mr. Biden, how do you plan to protect the poor and middle class as the troublemakers on your fringe try to bring down the coal, oil and natural gas industries before alternatives and technology are in place--for instance, your predecessor recommending civil disobedience at coal plants. Will you be flying by glider to meet with important foreign dignitaries to make use of your vast experience or will you be flying on a wing and a prayer?"

In today's WSJ, a reader William L. Anderson, writes: "If Al Gore's pet projects (he's a major partner in Kleiner Perkins) had to compete head-to-head with coal fired plants, his return on investment would be near zero, and would be negative if these projects were not heavily subsidized through tax breaks and out right payments from taxpayers. Thus, Mr. Gore is trying to hamstring the competition, and in doing so will become a very wealthy man."

And if he and the Democrats are successful, Ohio's economy as well as that of other coal states will be ruined, punishment I suppose for the 2000 and 2004 elections.

Ohio--you need to vote for the candidates who won't ruin our economy--McCain-Palin.

When the power goes off

Much of Ohio was without power last week--no electricity, no cable TV, no internet. It was darn inconvenient--and we didn't even lose ours! Meetings were cancelled, traffic lights were out, grocery stores and restaurants had rotting food, lots of "little guys" had no income. Remember folks, 50% of the country's electricity is supplied by coal. Yes, that stuff the environmentalists and the Obamanationists want to ruin. If you think it was dark last week, just wait!

Liberals and fat cat CEOs never worry about the cap and trade costs which will kill the coal industry, dim the lights, and hurt the poor. But if you are a voter in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Indiana, and you're clinging to your religion or guns, you'd better start worrying about where the electricity is going to come from and how you'll pay for it when the e-regulations gear up. And no, I don't like McCain's falling down the green hole either, but sometimes you have to choose your battles. The only hope we have is he has chosen a conservative running mate who might be able to influence him.

Taking the Fifth

William Nordhaus, an economics professor at Yale has written "The Challenge of Global Warming: Economic Models and Environmental Policy." Before you get too excited about it, keep in mind he'll keep revising it until he gets it right. This is the 5th model.

"It represents the fifth major version of modeling efforts, with earlier versions developed in the periods 1974-1979, 1980-82, 1990-1994, and 1997-2000. Many of the equations and details have changed over the different generations, but the basic modeling philosophy remains unchanged: to incorporate the latest economic and scientific knowledge and to capture the major elements of the economics of climate change in as simple and transparent a fashion as is possible." p. 6

This current model needs at least half of the countries of the world to participate in the carbon tax program for an abatement cost penalty of 250 percent--so those of us who are going to tax carbon will be paying for those who aren't. Has a familiar ring to it doesn't it? To achieve a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050 (the Al Gore goal), the tax bill for the U.S. economy would be $1,200 billion.

If I've ever seen a license to steal while polluting the carbon exchange tax is it. And I've never been able to figure out just who gets this tax--I mean after the wealthy Scandinavians who control it take their profit. Or do they get to keep all of it? I think it will be like Ohio's tobacco settlement, which recently went up in smoke. Wasn't it suppose to go for health care or something related to the damage cigarettes have caused. I remember when some of the librarians at OSU were given this stuff like play money! The legislators are just too sticky fingered to be safe around large puddles of uncommitted money.

"Trading emissions permits is one of the great innovations in environmental policy. The advantage of allowing trade is that some firms can reduce emissions more economically than others. If a firm has extremely high costs of reducing emissions, it is more efficient for that firm to purchase permits from firms whose emissions reductions can be made more inexpensively. This system has been widely used for environmental permits, and is currently in use for CO2 in the European Union (EU). As of summer 2007, permits in the EU were selling for about €20 per ton of CO2, the equivalent of about $100 per ton of carbon." p. 21

And for Ohioans? He's really, really negative about coal. Good-bye Ohio jobs. I think you can be quite sure none of this carbon tax money will go toward developing technology for clean-burning coal. Oh no. Send those jobs to China let them be done in their dirty coal fired plants so we can buy the stuff back (like "energy lite" bulbs). Although all Ohio's economic grief is good news for Democrats, because whenever they take away jobs through strikes or regulating the little guy out of business, or raising taxes, for some reason those poor dopes just beg for more and fall right in line and vote for more Democrats. Look at Cleveland--true Democrats all the way. It really is baffling.

So who pays the most? Well, the poor of course. That's who always pays with the schemes of the liberals to "improve" the world. They lose their homes in the name of urban renewal; they have to scramble for scarce housing so they can live in homes with no lead paint or asbestos; their children get to sit for hours on a bus so the children of legislators and government workers can go to private school (that's the rich's version of school choice) and spend their free time playing; they get to eat cheap processed food high in salt, fat and sugar so Obama Mamas can drive to the organic farm market in hybrid cars. Rich legislators don't put wind farms in their view; or nuclear plants in their back yard! And if the poor or retired live in rural areas--it's a dear price to pay to drive to Wal-Mart (if the liberals allowed one to be built) at over $4 a gallon, especially if they believed the Democrats pipe dream in 2006 that they would take care of them; and they are driving past fields of corn growing for the rich man's hybrid. Didn't you hear Obama's speech last night? NOW that you've finally selected a wealthy, biracial, inexperienced community organizer to be your president, we'll have health care for the poor! Well, golly miss molly, what in the world is this break-the-bank, Medicaid, SCHIP and Medicare we've been paying for?

I guess he's too young to remember the War on Poverty. Aren't we still paying the bill for that one?
