New shoes for walking

I bought a pair of Danskin athletic shoes at Wal-Mart yesterday called Lindsey (also the name of the granddaughter we lost in the divorce). I doubt that having the closers (shoe laces?) of elastic and Velcro is a good idea. Too much stretch and not enough support. But we'll see. I broke them in yesterday with a two mile walk along the lake front. Because I have a narrow foot, buying any shoe these days is tricky. The obesity problem seems to have spread to the foot, so the manufacturers design and sell for the consumer with a wider foot. Occasionally I can find a New Balance in a narrow, but not often. These are $22 at Wal-Mart and $17 on e-Bay with a shipping charge. I would never buy shoes I couldn' try on first because every manufacturer seems to use a different template for toes, arch and heel. I love the Nikes I bought right before our Middle East cruise in March, but I can't wear them every day, or even for every walk. Now that we're at Lakeside, I'm getting 5-6 miles a day in, 4 planned, and 1-2 just walking to lectures and programs. At home I like to do bare foot walking on the condo grounds, but here, there are just too many dogs and too few careful dog walkers with baggies.

I'll bet if Michelle had known about this bargain she wouldn't pay $540 for her tennies.

I have wide feet, and, I have yet to easily find shoes. I'm a size 8 (not obese) but since I've never tortured my feet into dress shoes & therefore since my feet are still foot-shaped, not smooshed with ugly toes, I have a hard time finding anything. If you are finding shoes that are so much wider than they used to be please, let me know where you're finding them!

I don't have particularly wide feet, and I still wear some of the same shoes I did six years ago, when I could pretty much grab a size seven and know it would fit, yet now most of the new shoes I try on are way too narrow.

Jenna--if those are athletic shoes and you walk or run, you should probably be doing 6 mo. not 6 years. Kelli--you need to shop with me; I find lots of C widths. Now if you need EE, not so much.

If those of us with narrow feet and wide feet both can't find a good fit, just who are they designing for?

The old vetern walker says: every 6 months for new walking shoes, if you walk much at all. I am usuallly braking in two pair at a time. Taking care of the feet akes all the difference....old time walker

I agree. I was able to get rid of a lot of night time leg pain just by buying a new pair of shoes.

My athletic shoes do get replaced regularly - every 4-6 months, just as you suggest.

Dress shoes don't get replaced as often, and I have been completely unable to find a new pair of flat white sandals (dressy NOR casual) this summer. I bought the one pair I found that actually went over my toes, and they started rubbing blisters within three hours of wearing them out of the house.

But the brown sandals I'm wearing today are some I bought probably five years ago, and I've never had any issues with them.

Oh yes, my sandals are 10 years old. Cost $5 I think.

My feet are way to ugly for sandels but I remember white summer sandels well as a girl and young women. I am now walking in the yard barefoot some as per Normas barefoot post. Indeed, it is very relaxing and makes the feel feel cool and refreshed, especially after my five miles walk.

AFter wearing these a few times, I gave them away. Too soft.

You’re right, Norma! It’s tricky to buy shoes when we aren’t able to fit it first, especially when purchasing online when it might not match our foot even when you ordered for your size. In fact, we should also be careful in buying new shoes because there are some stores who don’t entertain customers who are asking to return their products.
