Thursday Thirteen--13 cities in the U.S. named for saints

How many of these have you visited?

The big ones everyone knows. . .

1. St. Louis
2. St. Augustine
3. San Francisco
4. San Antonio
5. San Diego
6. Santa Barbara
7. Santa Clara
8. Santa Ana
9. Santa Maria
10.Santa Monica
11. St. Paul

And then the not so well known

12. St. Joseph, Illinois
13. St. Mary’s City, Maryland

I have visited 1,3,4,5,6,9,10,11 and 12. That I can remember. We were in Maryland a few years ago and so St. Mary's City is a possibility. This shows the Catholic Spanish and French influences.

And there are many more cities, states, rivers, parishes and counties named for saints. But. . .I only needed 13.

Los Angeles isn't named for angels, but for Mary. "El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reyna de los Angeles" (although it's a little murky).
Sacramento is named for the sacraments (after the river), but that's not its original name.
Santa Cruz is Holy Cross.

If you’d like to participate in Thursday Thirteen, check here.

I don't think I knew that San was Saint. My husband went to St. Mary's College.

I thought I'd been to more of these, but I've only ever visited St. Louis and St. Augustine - and St. Louis was just on the way to somewhere else, so I'm not sure if it counts!

Happy TT!

I've only been to two on your list, St. Paul and St. Louis. One not on your list that I've been to: Sault Ste Marie, MI. I'm talking about groundhogs this week.

I've been to most of these, but where is Santa Anna?

Mine is up

Santa Ana is the second most populous city in Orange County, California. With a population of 329,427, as of the 2011 census, Santa Ana is the 57th most-populous city in the United States.

San Joaquin and Santa Ana were the parents of Mary, the mother of Jesus. If you're familiar with California there is a San Joaquin Valley. Important agricultural area.

The T13 site isn't being maintained, which has me worried. Last time Janet was this quiet, she was undergoing treatment for cancer. The last post on her personal blog was in August and just a little before that announced her wedding, so maybe she's OK. I'm not sure about the other blog owner for the T13 site.

If you are putting your link in, then having it disappear, it's probably because you repeated both the name and link entries. They have it set to automatically remove repeats. Catches me off guard all the time. Just use a direct link and it should be fine.

Unless we can get a response from one of the site owners, it's all we can do.
