When reading statistics, watch the terms. Rank, rate, number, percent. For instance, Alaska RANKS 4th in the nation for black homicides. Wow. The RATE of homicide for blacks in Alaska is 29.22 per 100,000 (the national homicide rate is 4.62; 2.67 for white Americans). Must be a very violent place, that Alaska! In most states many fewer women are lost to this violence (about 12%), but in Alaska it's over 37 PERCENT. However, in NUMBERS only eight blacks were killed, 5 men and 3 women. 100% were killed by someone they knew, and 50% of those deaths were because of an argument. (2015 statistics from Violence Policy Center, April 2018, p. 3, state rankings)

I checked 4 sources--each had different figures for black male homicides. But I did see one in VPC that reported of the 7,014 black homicides, 121 were killed by law enforcement--of those where a relationship between victim and assailant could be determined, 75% were killed by someone they knew. Which is more likely to be breathlessly reported for days on the news, followed by a trial and protests?

Birthday greetings from Alaska

My cousin Gayle is such a faithful events greeter, and when the family lived in Alaska, we would be treated with colorful postcards and a personal note.  These three I found in the box I was clearing out today--one from the 70s, 80s and 90s: Kasilof, Fairbanks, and Angoon. Since she reads my blog, this is a special shout out to her.

Glaciers are part of the romance of mountains; the very name gives the thrill of the lonely and high and awful even to those who are not quite sure what a glacier may be. There is grave news about glaciers; they are disappearing, it would seem. Swiss peasants who are not yet quite all modernised enough to think toy railways in harmony with the eternal hills, declare that the tourists who go to see the glaciers are the cause of the ruin. Wherever the mountain cars run the glaciers flee.

It's a good thing we visited Alaska in 2001, 250 years after the glaciers were reported retreating.

You really can see Russia from Alaska

Sarah Palin never said she could see Russia from her house--that was her look alike Tina Fey. Here's what she actually said, "They're our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska." Big Diomede (Russia) and Little Diomede (U.S.A.) are about 2.5 miles apart. The media still love to play that meme to ridicule Palin. And God forbid that any woman other than Oprah becomes a media powerhouse, so she has to be attacked right now.

That said, President Obama may deserve impeachment (which Palin favors), but it's not going to happen, and encouraging others to believe this fantasy just diverts attention from what can be changed---like the Senate. I'm sick of the money appeals I get from groups I've never heard of wanting me to donate for this cause. And Democrats are getting funding appeals from their side on the same issue!

One last campaign appeal--Joe Miller

The toilet is closed

Dan Cornwall, the Alaskan Librarian on my bloglist, had a photo of an orange, hand made sign: "Dan Moller Cabin and Toilet closed until further notice," so I asked Google, "Who is Dan Moller?" Well, wouldn't you want to know--I mean if you were hiking in Alaska this might be important. So here it is--all you need to know about the Dan Moller Cabin. It was built in the 1930s by the CCC and you can stay there (when not closed) for 2 nights at $35/night. But it's pretty primitive; although many people lived this way in the 1930s without the luxury of propane, garbage bags and fire extinquishers.

Water is available from a nearby stream, uphill from the cabin. Treat all water before using. Bring your own sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lantern, pots, pans, plates, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher and fire starter. This cabin contains a wood stove. Wood is not provided, so you must bring your own if you wish to use the stove. Cabin is heated by a propane wall furnace. Propane is supplied. Bears frequent the area.

But I still don't know who Dan Moller was, so I keep checking and finally find a guide book that tells me he's the guy who laid out the Dan Moller Trail in the 1930s. Whoop! That's not much to go on.

The cabin's logs are rotting so they will build a new one--ADA accessible. How the disabled get there may be another story. From the guide book it looks like an 1800 ft. upward climb on the Dan Moller trail. It is located three and one-half miles southwest of Juneau on Douglas Island. Access by 3 mile trail on Pioneer Street off Cordova Street, and at the end of Jackson St. above Blueberry Hills subdivision in West Juneau.

Sarah Palin's book, Going Rogue

I hadn't planned to buy a copy, and it certainly won't be accessible at UAPL if other titles written by conservatives are any example (16 copies of an anti-Bush book are in the budget--they trained us well--we conservatives buy rather than wait for a 2nd copy of our books). The venom and wrath of the left lashing out at her again will probably boost the sales. Here's an item that highschool friend Bob C. sent. The source seemed a little iffy, so I looked it up. It is written by Dewey Whetsell of Alaska, and he is a sax playing fisherman, a firefighter, and a writer, who has a few books to sell. This is the blog, Restless Brain Syndrome that reposted his article. It's gone viral on the internet, which either shows Dewey's talent as a writer, or that a lot of people out there still love Sarah.

I know why men find Sarah so threatening, or the left in general, but really, I just don't get the women who become hysterical at her name. Other than Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Jordan I can't think of too many female politicians to do anything but ride the coattails of husbands and fathers.

Here's the breaking point: Neither side of the Palin controversy gets it. It's not about persona, style, rhetoric, it's about doing things. "1- Democrats forget when Palin was the Darling of the Democrats, because as soon as Palin took the Governor's office away from a fellow Republican and tough SOB, Frank Murkowski, she tore into the Republican's "Corrupt Bastards Club" (CBC) and sent them packing. Many of them are now residing in State housing and wearing orange jump suits. The Democrats reacted by skipping around the yard, throwing confetti and
singing "la la la la" (well, you know how they are). Name another governor in this country that has ever done anything similar. But while you're thinking, I'll continue.

"2- Now with the CBC gone, there were fewer Alaskan politicians to protect the huge, giant oil companies here. So, she constructed and enacted a new system of splitting the oil profits called "ACES". Exxon (the biggest corporation in the world) protested and Sarah told them "don't let the door hit you in the stern on your way out." They stayed, and Alaska residents went from being merely wealthy to being filthy rich. Of course the other huge international oil companies meekly fell in line. Again, give me the name of any other governor in the country that has
done anything similar.

"3- The other thing she did when she walked into the governor's office is she got the list of State requests for federal funding for projects, known as "pork". She went through the list, took 85% of them and placed them in the "when-hell-freezes-over" stack. She let locals know that if we need something built, we'll pay for it ourselves. Maybe she figured she could use the money she got from selling the previous governor's jet because it was extravagant. Maybe she could use the money she saved by dismissing the governor's cook (remarking that she could cook for her
own family), giving back the State vehicle issued to her, maintaining that she already had a car, and dismissing her State provided security force (never
mentioning-I imagine-that she's packing heat herself). I'm still waiting to hear the names of those other governors.

"4- Now, even with her much-ridiculed "gosh and golly" mannerism, she also managed to put together a totally new approach to getting a natural gas pipeline built which will be the biggest private construction project in the history of North America. No one else could do it although they tried. If that doesn't impress you, then you're trying too hard to be unimpressed while watching her do things like this while
baking up a batch of brownies with her other hand.

"5- For 30 years, Exxon held a lease to do exploratory drilling at a place called Point Thompson. They made excuses the entire time why they couldn't start drilling. In truth they were holding it like an investment. No governor for 30 years could make them get started. This summer, she told them she was revoking their lease and kicking them out. They protested and threatened court action. She shrugged and reminded them that she knew the way to the court house. Alaska won again.

"6- President Obama wants the nation to be on 25% renewable resources for electricity by 2025. Sarah went to the legislature and submitted her plan for Alaska to be at 50% renewables by 2025. We are already at 25%. I can give you more specifics about things done, as opposed to style and persona . Everybody wants to be cool, sound cool, look cool. But that's just a cover-up. I'm still waiting to hear from liberals the names of other governors who can match what mine has done in two and a half years. I won't be holding my breath.

"By the way, she was content to to return to AK after the national election and go to work, but the haters wouldn't let her. Now these adolescent screechers are obviously not scuba divers. And no one ever told them what happens when you continually jab and pester a barracuda. Without warning, it will spin around and tear your face off. Shoulda known better."

Retiring my Palin-Jindal pin

If she can't stand the heat and won't complete the term she was elected to, I don't want her for President of the U.S. She may have good reasons--and family and harassment from the press would certainly be enough--but that won't go away for an even tougher office and scrutiny. She is now the gal the press, both liberal and conservative, love to hate. Best would have been to get back to the job of being governor.

I doubt that she will even be useful stumping for other candidates and issues. She was even roundly criticized by the press for supporting an autism fund raising effort. They can make 'em, like Obama, or break 'em.

Our Alaskan Cruise

About eight years ago we were preparing to take our first cruise--our first really big trip. I had it on my list of things to do when I retired and wrote it into my Post Employment Plan (PEP). Also in my PEP was to take up painting again (after about 30 years.) Those were the days before blogging when my family and friends just received fat envelops or stapled copies of things I wrote. When I was visiting my family at Easter, I found one of my hand painted post cards from that trip. I didn't have a scanner in those days, so had no record of it. I'd taken along a tiny little w.c. set and post card size #300 paper. I have no idea where the rest of them are or to whom I sent them.

Frozen pipes and visiting moose

It's about 18 degrees here in Columbus. We had a smattering of snow yesterday, some ice on the fringes. Monday was a slick day--I think 4 people were killed and some semi's ran off the road. But at Tundra Medicine, they haven't seen zero in three weeks and the moose are visiting regularly. She's getting a tad stir crazy, what, with just the plumber to talk to. Stop by and leave a comment. That is always our big fear with our summer home--frozen pipes--because they ice fish just a few blocks away. We leave the heat set at about 50 degrees and leave all the cabinet doors open, but if the power goes off--good luck! And I hear a dog sled race has been called off in Minnesota--too much snow; and the Russians and Ukrainians are fighting over gas lines, which might leave some of Europe wishing for more global warming.

Off shore drilling ban lifted

on July 14, 2008 and prices immediately began to plummet. I'm not sure even one drop has resulted from this, but all the naysayers who said it wouldn't affect prices at the pump obviously were wrong. Gasoline is below $1.70 at some stations in Columbus. Adjusted for inflation, I think that's cheaper than when I was in high school.

This makes greengoes unhappy because Algorists were using this to push all the oil and gas sky-is-falling stories (it's God's stored sunshine, but they are pantheists). Obamites aren't happy either, because there go all the billions in taxes that the government's been so dependent on, right when all the rich folks are losing their income, too. Even Governor Palin might be in trouble and see her popularity drop (highest of all the governors), since Alaskans each (yes, even the kids) get part of the profits from their oil bounty.

Just in time to hop in the car and drive to Grandma's--or in our case, to the home of niece Joan in Indianapolis. Although we'll be staying in Columbus this year and having a wonderful turkey and/or ham dinner at our daughter's home. I just love that part about having kids--when they grow up they can cook for you.

Sarah Palin Sexism Watch

Like shooting fish in the proverbial barrel. Wish I'd thought of this one! Sarah Palin Sexism Watch includes some awful, some hateful, and some unexpected folks. Mostly they're terrified Democrats, with a few on the opposite of the political fence. Me? I'm paraphrasing that old feminist line on abortion: I wouldn't run for vice president myself if I were a governor and had 5 children, but I support the right of a mother of 5 who governs a state and wants to go higher.

For the most part her group of shameful journalist articles (with links) seems to be in the same bag of obsequiousness that has paved the way for Obama.

Sarah Palin’s Christian testimony

You’ve heard Obama and McCain interviewed by Rick Warren, and maybe you heard a CNN reporter giving snippets and declaring them scary. Here’s a recording of her testimony in her words. If you don't want to hear the ads and a telephone interview with a woman who was at the Republican convention, start about 1/3 into the tape. It lasts about 14 minutes and she is speaking to a particular graduating group and there were special guests in the audience. According to the host, the site at the church got so many hits, it brought down their server, but someone had captured it. It is going around the internet, and I'm sure for non-Christians not accustomed to the language, certain phrases will sound very foreign. I've heard many similar send offs (although not from our governor). The pastor talks about Alaska being a refuge state "in the last days." Although I'm not a dispensationalist and have never heard this particular point, I don't think it hurts one bit to live your life as though Jesus were coming back this afternoon. I think Martin Luther said something similar, as did St. Paul.

Update: Today I was reading Martin Luther's letter that accompanied his translation (?)/commentary of the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament. He was so convinced that they were in the last days and the Lord was coming back, he wasn't sure it was worth it to get the book into German so the ordinary person could read it. When I find it again, I'll post, but it was very interesting. A letter to John Frederic, I think. Anyway, CNN needs to upgrade its understanding of Christian eschatology.

More smears, but who’s counting?

I take most of my blog entries and links from journalists writing for real newspapers (or their blogs), even the ones I don't like (NYT, WaPo, LA Times) but increasingly the MSM is going to the hyperbologs for their sources. Crazy, innit? I'm just an elderblogger and I find better sources than trained, whipper-snapper journalists. Soledad of CNN has 4 children, I've heard (possibly gossip). I wonder why she isn’t at home with the kids? She’s obviously a bit addled by the responsibilities of a 24 hour news channel.

“I just watched CNN's Soledad O'Brien sandbag former White House Communications Director Nicole Wallace by asking her how Sarah Palin can claim to be a defender of special needs children when she cut the budget for that Alaska office by 62 percent. Wallace wasn't familiar with the charge -- which isn't surprising, since it's only being made on DailyKos and another liberal site. (Tip for Ms. O'Brien: DailyKos is not a reliable news site.)

This charge is based on looking at the budget for Alaska's Special Education Service Agency for 2007-2009. In fact, the December 2006 budget document that they cite would have been prepared by the outgoing administration -- that of Republican Frank Murkowski, whom Palin defeated.

What's gone unmentioned is that Palin signed into law a dramatic reform of the state's education financing system that equalizes aid to rural and urban districts, while significantly increasing funding for special needs students." More details at Weekly Standard Blog

What do Alaskans think of Governor Palin?

She has EXECTUTIVE experience *running a government* (something NONE of the other candidates can actually boast, even John McCain) as Governor of Alaska and got there by defeating the *incumbent* Republican Governor, who was definitely part of the ‘old school’ and who WAS very much in the pocket of the big oil companies. We in Alaska wanted change – and we got it in the person of Sarah Palin!

Sarah Palin is everything she looks to be and more. Her approval rating as Governor of Alaska has been as high as 95% and is currently leveled out consistently in the upper 80 percentile throughout the state (and in both parties) - the HIGHEST approval rating of ANY sitting Governor.

Sarah has been turning around corruption in the Legislature of Alaska - turning things on their ear for that matter; cutting spending in spite of the increased income the state is currently receiving due to the high oil prices - she has insisted on putting a huge amount of the ‘windfall’ into savings for the future rather than spending, spending, spending - and has insisted from the get-go on what she refers to as ‘honest, ethical and transparent governing’ - no more closed door meetings and dealings - the big oil companies thought she would be a pushover and have learned better to their chagrin.

She understands the ‘real people’ and the economic issues we all face (Alaskans along with the rest of the country) - she was one of ‘us’ not long ago. Rather than passing useless ‘laws’ or throwing money at pet projects, she (most recently) temporarily suspended the state gas tax (on gasoline at the pumps, fuel oil and natural gas for homes, etc.) and has ordered checks issued to ALL residents of Alaska this fall in an attempt to assist with the burden of high fuel costs for the upcoming winter. I could go on and on, but that’s enough for now. She isn’t doing these things to be popular – she is doing it because her constituents are HURTING financially and she can help.

She became Governor of Alaska by defeating the Incumbent Republican Governor and doing it *without* the money or the support of the Republican Party, which was amazing in itself - and she won by a landslide. The ‘powers that be’ at that time totally underestimated Sarah and learned better the hard way. She has done exactly what she claimed she was going to do and is just as popular today as the day she was elected - perhaps more so since even the Democrats up here seem to like her - she works well with both sides in the Legislature here.

No wonder our leftist media are quaking in their high heel sneakers.

McCain Palin ticket

Another history making event--not a woman as a VP choice, because we’ve had that, but a parent of a special needs child. Her youngest child has Downs Syndrome; the parents knew, and chose to give him life and lots of love. Unless you are pro-life, you probably don’t know that statistically, births of Downs Syndrome babies are down. Not because fewer are conceived--the age of women giving birth is going up and that’s a serious risk factor. But prenatal testing has given parents the choice of not carrying a disabled child to term. There are also many couples who choose to adopt Downs babies.

That said, I actually believe a woman with 5 children ought to take some time off to raise them. Call me a reactionary, but that's a huge job and I think kids need their mother around, not just high paid nannies. (Please, no Queen Victoria stories.) I wouldn't vote against McCain for that reason, but I believe women have a different career track than men. You can do and have it all, but not all at the same time. The vice president, whether Biden or Palin, is a heart beat away from the oval office. She better have some outstanding executive qualities (she's Governor of Alaska) or this could be called one up(wo)manship.

Of the four running for the White House, Biden has been in Washington the longest, which makes Obama's complaints about business as usual and need for change sort of silly, and Palin is a first term Governor with many reforms to her credit, which makes McCain's criticism of Obama as inexperienced fall flat.

Well, she's still the youngest and prettiest (former beauty queen) of the four.
