OK for Buckeyes to date Wolverines

All Ohio State students, faculty, staff and student employees are required to pass ANNUAL re-education courses in sexual matters. It's probably the same at your alma mater or institution of interest. I recall when this type of required re-education back in the 1990s was small group workshops from time to time, then they grew to a cottage industry for social workers and psychologists, now they are a national industry with thousands and thousands of employees and enforcers. I read through the 17 pages of the university's sexual misconduct policy, only one brief paragraph of which was about protection of the accused (not innocent obviously)--and the policy is labeled, "interim," which means it could change at any moment.

It appears that the only safe relationship for a Buckeye is to date or become involved with someone from University of Michigan!

U Got This

“U Got This,” is beginning today at Ohio State University.  “ To advance a culture of respect and care for others, the university is launching mandatory online sexual misconduct prevention education for all faculty, staff and students.”

Am I the only one who finds “culture of respect” and “mandatory education” for adults in the same sentence sort of off putting?  Plus, if the unit or department already has something in place, like diversity training or toxic masculinity workshops, that doesn’t get the student out of the pan-university requirement.

If the student is also a university employee, he/she gets to take it twice and it’s required every year.  According to the web page, they haven’t yet come up with discipline (aka punishment) if a student blows this off.

The production company is called Catharsis Productions and was created about 20 years ago by Dr. Gail Stern and Christian Murphy. This Atlantic article is about 4 years old, but skimming it, I think is lines up with other things I’ve read. Considered innovative, entertaining and funny, after 20 years shouldn’t we be seeing fewer assaults and bullying by now?

Rasheed Sulaimon—where is the crime?

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, neither female student at Duke filed charges or talked to the police.  Sulaimon may be a scum bag, but aren’t there some rules to follow here?

Separate allegations of sexual assault by Sulaimon came from two female students in the 2013-14 academic year. Both students voiced allegations publicly, but neither filed a complaint through the Office of Student Conduct or took legal action through the Durham Police Department. The students declined to discuss their allegations with The Chronicle.

Neither paper gives the names of the women who heard the allegations at a diversity retreat not the names of the women who said it happened.  In another life with fewer stakes we’d call that gossip or bullying. How does an employee of Duke report an assault that wasn’t reported?

Sexual assault and the military

Most sexual assaults are male on male.  Imagine the mess we'll have in the military now that don't ask don't tell is history.

"Sexual assault includes rape, nonconsensual sodomy (oral or anal sex), indecent assault (e.g., unwanted and inappropriate sexual contact or fondling), or attempts to commits these acts. Sexual assault can occur without regard to gender, spousal relationship, or age of victim.*

Other sex-related offenses are defined as all other sexual acts or acts in violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) that do not meet the above definition of sexual assault, or the definition of sexual harassment as promulgated in DoD Directive 1350.2, Department of Defense Military Equal Opportunity, para E2.1.15.

Firefighters forced to participate in gay pride parade win legal battle

Four firefighters lodged a complaint against San Diego for being forced to participate in the city’s gay pride parade in 2007. Although the firefighters objected numerous times to taking part in the event, the fire department disregarded their complaints and the firefighters report they were sexually harassed.

Let's not pretty up the terms. Gay Pride means pride in homosexual acts, men having sex with men (MSM) is the medical term because the costs to the health of the men are considerable, and sodomy is the Biblical term. Why should anyone, straight or gay, be forced to parade a sexual preference that may not be his own?

4150 OSU students

That doesn't seem like a very high number--on a campus of 50,000+. The weasel word is "chose." I'm guessing several thousand were either busy working, studying or didn't have the opportunity.

OSU now has a fund to provide $500 for a student who has experienced sexual assault or "intimate partner violence." This is to cover things like broken stuff, cell phone with prepaid minutes, emergency housing, help in breaking a lease, court costs, etc. This supplements other funds and insurance for students in distress. "Any OSU student who has alleged to a university official that they have experienced sexual violence can apply for assistance. A police report is not necessary in order to access the funds." Hmmm. There is a list of people--university staff and officials--who are consulted. If the student didn't report anything to the police, does the official have to? Wonder if the parents get to know too? And if he/she returns to the abusive one, do they get a second request for funds?

The Sexual Wellness Program at the Ohio State Student Wellness Center is devoted to promoting safer sex and healthy relationships. This program is home to The Condom Club, which offers condoms to OSU students at an extremely low cost--50 condoms for $5.00 and also access to free oral dams, latex gloves, finger cots and lubricant. Must be going after the GLBT group. And because 44% of the couples who use condoms do so incorrectly, The Center has volunteers called "sexperts" to help with this problem.

I worked with hundreds of student employees over my career at OSU (and U of I)--it was the small town and rural stock that worked the hardest and had the best values. Asian and Indian students were also outstanding, if you could keep them before a higher tech unit snatched them up. 99% were serious about their education and didn't party on week-ends or sleep around. When they graduated, many started at more than I made, but librarianship has always been at the bottom.

Do you suppose there was this much assault, violence, STDs, and abortions for college men and women back in the bad old days of the 40s and 50s when women had hours, didn't share dorms or apartments with men and the doors were locked at an appointed hour? Sometimes fences are more useful than ambulances.

Spotlight on Campus Freedom

The Ohio State University gets a red light! I wonder who determines what is an unwanted flirtation? Or leering? If a drunk girl sits on a guy's lap at the campus bar, has she committed sexual harassment?

This page says OSU doesn't have a loyalty oath or an honor code, however, when I was re-hired in the 1970s, I'm quite sure a loyalty oath was required of employees--perhaps not for students, though. I know the Veterinary College had its own honor code.

Ohio's Attorney General is refusing to resign. He says he's rolling up his sleeves, zipping up his pants, and now he's ready to do the work of the people (Democrats ought to ban that phrase from their guide book for political hacks). Ohioans haven't had an impeachment since 1808--200 years. Our guys don't even know how to do it! Wonder what this will cost the taxpayers in lawyer fees? So the Democrats, the guys who wet themselves over former Governor Taft's unreported golf outings, are pulling out all the stops, pressuring him to resign. Things are so murky in the OAG's office that they definitely don't want a public trial bringing up all the dirt. Short of calling in the Clintons to knee-cap him, I don't know what else they can do.

Ohio's Attorney General is

Disgusting! His behavior, his apology, and his refusal to resign! This guy is unbelievable--or worse--maybe he's too believable. He's a man of the day--the rules are for everyone else, but not him, especially politicians. Marc Dann, it's time to get out of Dodge and let our former-pastor-Governor who ran on Christian values 2006, appoint someone who knows what an oath and vow mean, to say nothing of the laws about sex with your staff.

Is it only the Republican gay public servants who are held accountable? This is a heck of a lot more serious than text messaging house pages or a wide stance in the men's rest room! His office is described as a regular "animal house" by state employees.
