Because black lives matter

So the angry protesters/rioters have moved on from the myth of "systemic racism" to "defund the police." And liberal whites are helping endanger the black neighborhoods in misplaced guilt. Even those who stayed home in the comfort of their privileged man-caves, are cheering the rioters on. Oh so brave, those white liberals. The limp, weak blue boy-mayor of Minneapolis had to leave the protest in disgrace because he would NOT agree to defund the Minneapolis police, ONE of which killed a suspect who had become unreasonable (autopsy showed drugs) while trying to pass a counterfeit bill.

Let's see how that works:

  • No police when a woman is assaulted or raped.
  • No police when homes and apartments are broken into and granny's TV and cell phone are stolen in a sweep for a few dollars for drugs.
  • No police to investigate the child pornography ring preying on the most vulnerable.
  • No police to call when mom's purse is snatched while she's looking at the fruit display at the Korean market.
  • No police to stop the speeders going 90 mph near your child's school.
  • No police to rush into a bombed building to carry our survivors.
  • No police to keep the neighborhood businesses and grocery stores safe and accessible.
  • No police to call when your sister is patiently waiting in line at the bank and some goons rush in claiming her rights don't matter, only theirs.
  • No police to direct traffic and walk the perimeter of the sports or music venue so the privileged masses can pay $160 to see their favorite black athlete or entertainer.
  • No police to help rush that pregnant mom to the hospital, but who end up delivering the baby near the exit ramp.
  • No police leagues to provide a healthy outlet for fatherless boys and girls through competitive sports.

Most violent crimes are committed by whites (by the numbers there are more of them) and in confrontations with police they are killed or put out of business at a higher rate (their crime rate is lower) than black criminals. But let's just unleash them and call it “black lives matter.”

Who knew what when? Theodore McCarrick

“More than sixty years after his priestly ordination, nearly five decades after he began sexually abusing young men and boys, more than four decades after his episcopal consecration, and at least nineteen years after his preying on seminarians was first reported to the Vatican, Theodore McCarrick is – we are told – on the verge of being removed from the clerical state”

In this era of either hyper-vigilance over a joke or a yearbook 35 years old,  contrasted with a casual accepting attitude toward homosexuality, the church will be conflicted over what to do.  So far, the oversight and caring for the teens and boys who have been abused is just disgusting.

Second wave feminism and assault

Forty-five years ago I'd occasionally attend a "consciousness raising" group during the blossoming of second wave feminism. I wrote book reviews for a female publication put out by some OSU librarian-feminists. Women studies departments were being developed to capitalize on the interest. It was the era of “women’s lib.”  I don't recall the homes exactly, but they were in the OSU campus area. And were at night!  Sitting on the floor with our arms wrapped around legs seemed to be required, even if there was a free chair in the room. I may have attended with a woman in my neighborhood who was unhappy in her marriage to a professor, and later abandoned husband and children to go east and find herself. At least I can’t imagine I was so foolish to go into that area at night alone.  I think her name was Laura.

Even with a Russian major and all those Soviet history and literature courses I had, I didn't connect the dots between feminism and Marxism until much later when the movement leaders began dividing up women by black/white, gay/straight, young/old. At these meetings women would talk about their sadness at dashed dreams, boredom with being a stay at home mom, disappointment with career choices, anger with parents, boyfriends or husbands for not understanding. Heady stuff.

Not once did I ever hear a woman say she'd been assaulted, raped, or even abused. That’s not to say it wasn’t happening, just that no one said anything if it was.

U Got This

“U Got This,” is beginning today at Ohio State University.  “ To advance a culture of respect and care for others, the university is launching mandatory online sexual misconduct prevention education for all faculty, staff and students.”

Am I the only one who finds “culture of respect” and “mandatory education” for adults in the same sentence sort of off putting?  Plus, if the unit or department already has something in place, like diversity training or toxic masculinity workshops, that doesn’t get the student out of the pan-university requirement.

If the student is also a university employee, he/she gets to take it twice and it’s required every year.  According to the web page, they haven’t yet come up with discipline (aka punishment) if a student blows this off.

The production company is called Catharsis Productions and was created about 20 years ago by Dr. Gail Stern and Christian Murphy. This Atlantic article is about 4 years old, but skimming it, I think is lines up with other things I’ve read. Considered innovative, entertaining and funny, after 20 years shouldn’t we be seeing fewer assaults and bullying by now?

I checked out “U Got This” reeducation camps and they are already offered on many campuses, so Ohio State is sort of late to the party. https://titleix.osu.edu/navigation/prevention/training.html?

Of course, re-education camps come in many sizes and countries.

“Vast swathes of the Uighur population in China’s western region of Xinjiang — as well as Kazakhs, Kyrgyz and other ethnic minorities — are being detained to undergo what the state calls “transformation through education.” Many tens of thousands of them have been locked up in new thought-control camps with barbed wire, bombproof surfaces, reinforced doors and guard rooms. “https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/15/opinion/china-re-education-camps.html

Can you cite the crime reports?

There have apparently been a minuscule number of cases of men "transitioning"--dress, nails, estrodiol supplements, but still in tact--who have been assaulted when using the men's room. That's really unfortunate, but I've never seen a published crime or health report report about it. What I have seen is the 40% suicide rate and ridiculously high STD rate for transgendered male to female. Now that is reported in the medical literature, as well as high incarceration rate and homelessness, plus liver, cancer and heart problems from the hormones. In the social science soft literature, we're all to blame for their behavior and unhappiness. But why wouldn't the LGBTQ community go for the big prize of helping their fellow members instead of putting 51% of the population at risk for sexual assault?
