Bush freed the Afghan women."The recent reopening [of Afghanistan's military medical school closed by the Taliban] in Kabul, in the spring of 2009, could help change the shape of medicine in Afghanistan. . . about one-quarter of students are women. Allowing Afghan women to attend medical school, or any school for that matter, was unheard of in the past [before Bush freed them from the Taliban]. . . Most Afghan women have not been allowed to learn to read and therefore cannot pass an entrance examination. However, the 9 female cadets accepted for medical training passed all entrance exainations and met all stringent scholastic and physical requirements for admission to the National Military Academy of Afghanistan. "Girls in Afghanistan sometimes have acid thrown in their faces for going to school," said CDR Gary Harrison, MC, USN.
"We're at the very beginning, but the legacy we leave here will have an influence for decades to come," said LCDR Sunny Ramchandani, MC, USN, who helped establish the medical school's curriculum.

When I googled this, I found nothing but the JAMA article and your item--everything else was on very young girls going back to school. Wonder why this was ignored in the MSM? There must have been many years in the planning and competition for students.
Bush invades Afghanistan in 2001 and the Afghan Military Medical School doesn't reopen until 2009. Over 7 years, now there's some major league dithering for you.
You obviously missed the point. If it hadn't been for Bush, Afganistan would still be under the Taliban and women would still be subject to that terror. Afghanistan is still a 3rd world country and is proceding at its own pace. It will take many years for it to make up for what was lost in the 80s and 90s, and to overcome its past. Only Democrats expect instant results from others, while allowing their own president to muck things up royally.

There's this really strange thing about you Republicans. Though I didn't vote for Bush, I did still consider him everyone's president. While you guys apparently feel if you don't personally vote for a guy, then he's just president of the people who voted for him.
Thank you for catching that slip. Yes, he is my president too. I should have written, "their choice for president," because he certainly wasn't mine. He is not nearly as vilified as Bush was by his enemies on the left.
The school was reopened due to international aid, in large part by China and India. So how is Bush getting the credit?
Bush freed the Afghan women.
Without him, no women would have been in the class. Also, if you have any experience in construction or planning, the guys who hang the doors and windows didn't do the heavy lifting.
