"As the discussions over attacks on public education, racial
justice, and the future of democracy continue to dominate the American
conversation, thousands of sociologists whose work provides insights on these
and other vital topics will meet at the American Sociological Association’s
118th Annual Meeting, August 17-21, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Approximately
600 sessions featuring over 3,000 research papers are open to the press.
From race and racism to mental health, from climate control and environmental
policy issues to artificial intelligence, sociologists are investigating and
reporting on the most sensitive problems confronting American society. This
year’s theme, “The Educative Power of Sociology,” shows how sociology’s
educative power exists within its ability to convey knowledge and research
critically, and to even offer solutions and interventions to social problems,
from classrooms to boardrooms, individuals and families to communities,
institutions to nation-states, and social movements to social change and
justice. Given the diverse range of topics that will be covered, the ASA Annual
Meeting will provide a wealth of information for journalists assigned to nearly
any beat.
Session highlights include:
Attacks on Public Education and Strategies of Resistance to Protect the Public
Sphere. This session is focused on the broad attacks on public schooling,
including the push to privatize public education, attack anti-racist curricula,
and expand charter schools or create separate school districts. Panelists will
discuss different strategies of attacking public education playing out as part
of the general critique of public institutions and actors along with strategies
of resistance and efforts to protect a robust public sphere.
Participants: Amanda Evelyn Lewis, Noliwe Rooks, Jack Schneider, Julian Vasquez
Heilig, and John B. Diamond
White Rage, White Apathy, White Zeal: Understanding White Responses to Calls
for Racial Justice. White Americans have responded to calls for racial justice
in myriad, emotionally embodied ways. What shapes white people’s racialized
responses to demands for racial justice, such as those arising from the
Movement for Black Lives? Why do some white people become invested in fighting
against critical race theory, while the majority remain practically
indifferent? Finally, what compels some white people to “show up for racial
justice,” in mind, body and spirit? This panel speaks to these questions.
Participants: Jennifer C. Mueller, Kim Ebert, Amanda Evelyn Lewis, Sarah H.
Diefendorf, and Biko Mandela Gray
The Future of Democracy: A Conversation on the Supreme Court, Education, Civil
Rights, and Society with Tressie McMillan Cottom and Melissa Murray, moderated
by Dan Hirschman (live streaming available). Legal scholar, MSNBC contributor,
and former interim dean of the University of California Berkeley School of Law,
Melissa Murray, and sociologist Tressie Cottom will dialogue about the
implications for society and research of the recent Supreme Court decisions on
higher education, reproductive choice, civil rights and liberties and LGBTQ+
equality.
Participants: Prudence L. Carter, Daniel Hirschman, Tressie Cottom, and Melissa

“You got a hell of a new governor in Wes Moore, I tell ya,” Biden said during remarks on the economy Wednesday to an audience of IBEW union workers in Lanham, Maryland.
“He’s the real deal, and the boy looked like he could still play. He got some guns on him,” Biden added, eliciting cheers from the crowd.

Many of the practices and principles of DEI violate the Constitution and the Civil Rights Act. DEI suppresses rights of some while elevating the rights of others. Numerical quotas, government race-conscious policies, and speech codes do nothing to close the real disparities of achievement, because they do not address the root causes. Simon Fraser University professor Karen Ferguson had it right when she wrote that Bundy and his men dealt with the “psycho-cultural and therapeutic issue of black identity without having to deal with the structural and material issues that initially fostered the call for black self-determination.”“All the news you need to know from the chaotic week that was.

Three shootings in one week: On Saturday, in Buffalo, New York, a young white man traveled to a black neighborhood to shoot up a grocery store, killing 10 people and wounding 3. On Sunday, in Laguna Woods, California, a Chinese man went to a Taiwanese church with a gun, killing one and critically injuring four. In Dallas, a young black man went to a Korean spa, shooting three.
In a single week, three mass shootings. Each appears to have been driven by specific racial hate—against black Americans, against Taiwanese, and against Koreans.
Although the Buffalo shooter seemed to latch on to many deranged theories of both left and right wing varieties, his primary fixation was on the notion of a great replacement. This is a conspiracy that the Jews are bringing people of color into Western countries to overtake the white population and transform the character of the country. Remember how the white supremacists with the tiki torches in Charlottesville shouted “Jews will not replace us!” This was their ideology as well. It was also at least part of what motivated the Tree of Life shooter in Pittsburgh.
These shooters are all motivated by racist beliefs. Likely they are also mentally ill. (In the case of the Buffalo shooter, there were various red flags.) But somehow—and appallingly—this murderer has been cast as a . . . normal Republican. Here’s a Rolling Stone op-ed on it: “The Buffalo shooter isn’t a ‘lone wolf.’ He’s a mainstream Republican.” And after it emerged that the parishioners in the Taiwanese church tied up their shooter, Eric Swalwell, the congressman from California, wrote: “I’m sorry House GOP that the parishioners hogtied your boy.”
This is a shockingly dark way to perceive half the country. We’ve long been the country of bowling alone, and you don’t need more reminders of falling church and community organization membership or of how few friends the average American man has now. Believing that half the country is a mentally ill murderous cult isn’t going to help.”
Really? An 18 year old with mental problems known to all around him has a political/voting record? And Rolling Stone calls that "mainstream." Evil stuff. Especially with no mention of the blood bath in Chicago every week-end. And wasn't it Swalwell who was "sleeping with the enemy." Seemed to think he was attractive to a hot chick.
One of the news gathering services when I opened my computer this morning told of a 30 year old black man shot during a fight, taken to Grant hospital where he died. A woman, Judith Tatum, has been arrested and bond is set at $1 million. From his photo, he's been in trouble before and has a rap sheet (I'm guessing). According to an earlier TV report on crime in the city (big increase in the last year), 2/3 of the murders are black on black crimes, and many go unsolved because the community doesn't "snitch" and distrusts the police. According to data demographic sources, 54% of Columbus is white, and 29% black. Yet the media would be exploding at this moment if the young man had been killed by police. Black on black crime is ignored by media. It just doesn't sell. And a female killing a male in a fight should get it buried even deeper. Consequently, in many cases, the perps are still on the street and the crime continues. I don't know if Columbus is plagued by the loosey-goosey white DA's like they have in Wisconsin when a racist career criminal who had posted his hate on social media was left to roam the streets and killed 6 and injured 60 during the Christmas parade. That seems to be the liberal obsession these days--to turn as many blacks to crime and failure as possible. What worse form of racism is there?
https://youtu.be/dZ-w86r12Uw No social distancing, no masks, no quarantines. No isolation of sex criminals. Releasing drug cartel members. It's Biden's plan to control the virus and the opioid crisis.
The lockdowns of schools, churches, libraries and social activities have hurt the children in low income families the most. Democrats and their allies in the unions are once again using government control to hurt minorities. Systemic racism? How about just systemically Democrat party with business as usual? And equal opportunity plan to hurt all children, but hurts minorities more. We don't really need statistical models to tell us what we already know.

How much learning students lose during school closures varies significantly by access to remote learning, the quality of remote instruction, home support, and the degree of engagement. For simplicity’s sake, we have grouped high-school students into three archetypes. First, there are students who experience average-quality remote learning; this group continues to progress, but at a slower pace than if they had remained in school.4 Second, some students are getting lower-quality remote learning; they are generally stagnating at their current grade levels. Then there are students who are not getting any instruction at all; they are probably losing significant ground. Finally, some students drop out of high school altogether.
There are two lies circulating these last few years that I am sick of reading/hearing. Whatever truth or impact the writer could have is lost on me because of their own bias. Like this one in today's WSJ
"As the Trump Presidency ends in the disgrace of the Capitol riot, an effort is already underway to erase everything in the last four years as disgraceful too. That’s a lie—a Big Lie, to borrow the clichĂ© of the moment. Donald Trump’s profound character flaws need to be separated from what so many people in his Administration accomplished for the country."
The riot and character flaws. The Capitol riot is the responsibility of the mob or confused people who did it. It was not nearly as expensive, blood letting and horrifying as watching our major cities go up in flames this summer, pretending to be protests over racism and the death of George Floyd. The media are not carrying his speech of that day, or the information the FBI now has about the planning that went into it. If Trump had stayed in bed with a cold, the mob still would have pulled it off, because all we do know is the Capitol police didn't get their back up that was requested. And that needs to be investigated thoroughly. The stand down and defund chatter is from the left, not the right. Yes, try sending social workers in to handle mobs. Democrat mayors think that's OK.
With no evidence and no trial, the Leftists in government who still fear Trump's power and his high ratings are covering their own tracks in this travesty. Compare the character flaw of Biden supporting abortion for any reason right through the 9th month--including no reason--with the character flaws of our President. There's no question which man is deeply and irrevocably flawed.
Compare the character flaws of Biden's relationship with Ukraine and China with Trump's flaws in judgement with foreign nations, and again, it's just laughable. What isn't laughable is we will never have the 24/7 spying on Biden by the press even while he's in bed with the media hair sniffing and fondling.
And the other big lie I'm sick of is "systemic racism." That phrase is thrown around so frequently it has become old wall paper for the mind. I see it in every article about education, sports, entertainment, banking, real estate, religion, food, obesity, diabetes, smoking, HIV, the trades, marriage and family, college, and hair styles. Essentially, these writers who seem to be paid by the number of times the word "racism" appears in their piece or speech are saying the lives, achievements and values of black Americans are worth nothing unless they surpass or beat down white, Asian and Hispanic Americans. I'm sick of it. They are the highly paid bosses of the field hands charged with making blacks feel worthless and down trodden and whites feel like power houses who can make others of a different race fail just by existing.
Stop it!!
It's a form of eugenics.
After 9 months of preaching "science" at us (unless it was a therapeutic the President recommended then it wasn't science, it was hate that came to the fore), our national health plan is now to NOT vaccinate seniors after the hospital workers, but to use race as the criteria. Blacks are not less healthy because of their race; it's their lifestyle. Fewer children raised with married parents, more obesity, more life style diseases, poor diets (by choice), and higher crime rates. It's not racist to use medical science instead of social change goals.
Those woke goals have never been shown to improve the health and welfare of minorities. This pandemic and the leftist goals behind the plan to close down the economy, shut down the best chance minorities have had in my lifetime to achieve, thrive and excel--the Trump economy. The Left is terrified that minorities will get ahead--they could lose the lock on their vote. It would take a few months for them to get to me because there are a lot of logistics to get people convinced and lined up. I prefer to get the vaccine after a few bugs are worked out. But minorities are already very reluctant. I watched Dr. Varon of Houston on Newmax this morning, and he said about 50% of his healthcare workers do NOT plan to get the vaccine. At Houston Hospital, Head Of COVID-19 Unit Sees Some Staff Wary Of A Vaccine : NPR When asked why, he said most of them are black and Latinx, and because of a history of racism in the 1950s and 1960s, they are suspicious of being a guinea pig. Add to that the number of educated, wealthy, crunchies who are anti-vaxxers anyway, and you can see we've got a problem.
Our medical ethics swamp has decided the elderly are "too white." But their own history (which includes Medicaid and Obamacare) has made minorities suspicious and reluctant to trust their own industry. Add to that the critical race theory that is invading every level of education, all the non-profits and the corporations, plus many churches, plus four years of demeaning the President who got the Warp Speed program going in record time, and we've got a full fledge mess on our hands. Minority health care workers are also more suspicious of Trump (wonder whose fault that is--Gov. Cuomo and Gov. Newsom and MSM have continually laid a foundation of doubt that this vaccine could be safe).
Harald Schmidt, an expert in ethics and health policy at the University of Pennsylvania, says because older people are whiter, this will "level the playing field." What? Kill off granny in the nursing home so a Walmart stocker who because of youth isn't at risk can be first in line? Does that make sense? If this is "ethics" is suspiciously pre 20th century. And teachers are too white? Democrats/liberals/progressives definitely plan to keep the schools on lockdown and destroy another generation of black children who are already being short changed.Medical Ethicist: Elderly Shouldn't Get Vaccines First Because They're Too White | National Review
It's shocking how the left is willing to let people die because they hate Trump. Oh, and have you noticed that the AMA has flipped on HCQ American Medical Association Rescinds Hydroxychloroquine Prevention Order – [your]NEWS and now all of a sudden with the vaccine available it's no longer "unscientific" to talk about herd health? Fauci Predicts U.S. Could See Signs Of Herd Immunity By Late March Or Early April : Coronavirus Updates : NPR A few months ago, that concept was ridiculed.
The infamous Zeke Emanuel, buddy and advisor to Obama, and the "too white" for prime time Schmidt co-authored a textbook titled, “Rationing and Resource Allocation in Healthcare.”
