Extending unemployment benefits

A look at the history. They are usually extended far beyond the original plan, some for years, having the effect of "permanent" jobless benefits.

Luke 18:22

Or any of the non-John formulation of this verse.

You mean the rich young ruler story and how money corrupts the heart? Do you open a concordance and throw a dart?

That was the chapter and verse I meant.

What about that was unclear?

If it comes from a concordance, computer screen or the human tongue -- is it not still the Word?

All I can say is this, no Economic system will solve anything. No Government system will solve anything. We human beings who are sinners and tend towards greed and exploitation. That's a fact. Economic's chief purpose is to discover and refine just and loving means of creating, distributing, and consuming wealth to overcome poverty and to increase the material and spiritual prosperity of people. In a sin-filled world, economics—like all other activities of life in this world, cannot be perfect.

While I know some who are unemployed that are no fault of theirs. Therefore, I can't judge.

However, I do agree that there are people who rely on government alone for $$$ and that needs to change. In America, we are to find ways to earn money while getting help from the government, not taking money and not doing anything. I will always remember Benjamin Franklin's quote “The Constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.”

I think Chuck has a point with this verse. He was quite proud of his parsing of Scripture and Jesus looked at his heart. It's not really about money, but treasure-- about relying on anything but God. That's why the guy went away--didn't want to give up his dependence on ego. For some that is money, others power, and for many, their own intellect.
