It was a bit of a struggle to stay awake, but I'm glad I went to today's lectures at Lakeside on the South China Sea and the history of the U.S.-Japanese Alliance. As I was learning about shipping lanes, fishing rights and oil and gas reserves (2nd only to the Persian Gulf), the Spratlys (150 islands) and the Paracels (30 islands) and the demographics of an aging Japan, I thought about how many Americans were being fed stories about Miley Cyrus' hair cut, and the latest line up of Dancing with the Stars. Didn't the Romans do something like this to keep the masses content?

How are those old reserves in the China sea holding up against our wind mills?
