How did a non-news self defense story become a nationwide political plum for Obama?

George Zimmerman admitted to the self-defense shooting of a black youth, Trayvon Martin, in Sanford, Florida, on February 26, 2012. At the time, Martin's death got a total of four paragraphs in the Orlando Sentinel. It may have deserved more coverage but according to the most reliable eyewitness, Martin had Zimmerman on the ground and it appeared to be another non-news self-defense shooting -- not a racially motivated murder. But a month after the Zimmerman/Martin altercation, President Obama and his advisors decided to exploit the case as a re-election rallying cry for his most  loyal constituency, "the black vote." Obama's race-baiting political hustlers descended on Sanford with a mission: Make George Zimmerman a poster-boy for racist hate-crimes.
