Sarah Palin's Wardrobe

Far be it from me to say the media are going down the low road on this one--I complain about women's clothing all the time. I see women in public dressed in pajamas, sweat suits, cowboy boots, fringy-droopy 70s retro thingies, and low-cut porno outfits--and those are just the ones I see at church--you should see the ones headed for work! Both Michelle Obama and Sarah Palin have thankfully put a little class back into women's public face and rear end. (Real ladies don't say butt.) I truly hope it catches on.

Before Palin's Dayton, Ohio love fest back in late August, (view here, beginning about minute 10) I'd only seen her in casual clothes--I think she was either pregnant, or someone had turned down the heat and given her a sweater. So a black pencil skirt just a bit below the knees and short jacket fastened up to her neck looked pretty darn good, if a little schoolmarmish, and was pleasure after months and years of Hillary's pants suits and blazers and San Fran Nan busting out all over in her open front business suits below her cheery botoxed face. Sometimes she wears a red jacket, sometime pink. But she always looks good.

But I'm a woman blogger. Why shouldn't I comment on women's clothes? Why would the main stream media care what Sarah spends if they don't care what Obama or Biden spend on their tailor made suits? At home, she admits she buys at the consignment shop and about half of what the Republicans bought went back to the store either because it didn't fit or wasn't her style. I'm sure she always looks nice, but if you've got to change clothes several times a day and look good on TV (remember Nixon lost because he didn't want to wear make-up for the TV debates). I assume she's nursing Trig, and if you've ever done that, it can get messy and up the dry cleaning bills. Then there's the spit up, the diaper changing, etc. I would guess that to keep up the campaign pace she would need 8-10 outfits minimum. Then there's shoes, undergarments, jewelry, etc.

But there's always a double standard where Democrats are concerned, and the press is so deep into the dirty clothes hamper with Obama, they're getting smelly. I'm betting Nancy's pearls cost more than some of Sarah's outfits, but who's counting--certain not journalism jockeys who were so afraid Palin might have some ideas worth reporting that could get them in trouble with their editors that they decided to switch topics and go for the safe, soft news. The cost of her clothes.

Double standard? Are you forgetting John Edward's $400.00 haircut and what a splash that made at the time?

I think it's hard to present yourself as just an "average" person, and anti-elitist when you're getting $75,000.00 worth of clothing. Evidently she can talk the talk, but can't just quite walk the walk.

Edwards was talking the "two Americas" remember? Big sob stories. Palin is an executive woman. I'm guessing in Alaska she wears jeans to the hockey games and suits to public appearances. She never said wealth was bad. It was Edwards who could not walk the talk.

Edwards did the right thing--gave money to his mistress to support the baby. She probably got nice clothes too.

Wasn't that hair cut stuff from other Democrats during the primaries? He didn't make it to the big leagues.

Norma - and spending 75 grand is the only way you can do that? Funny how you can excuse your person, and still find fault with the other side. You've got a million excuses all lined up.

Anon - well, doesn't matter does it, they made a big deal of his hair cut. And I suppose it's better than dumping his wife ('cause she's no longer pretty enough) and marrying one of the women you've been having affairs with. How long does Edwards have to wait until he runs for President again. We should ask John McCain, he'll know.

I see nothing wrong with her wearing nice clothes, especially since I know the east and west coast media would have made mincemeat of her had she worn her consignment clothes, just like they scorned her for not aborting her baby, now ridicule her with false pity for the baby for bringing the baby along (gosh, all that noise must hurt his ears--better to have killed him earlier to save him the pain). When you hate the candidate, she won't be able to do anything right. I don't hate Obama, I just think he's a darn scary marxist. But a Christian. Yes, I don't believe he is a muslim. Doesn't need to be.

I think you said you are a librarian, and we're all fashion-challenged, so this is definitely the blind leading the blind.

I just remembered that I used to work in a library that was so dirty we were supplied lab coats to put over our regular clothes. On the job clothing subsidy.

A friend used to work in a clothing store where she was required to wear there clothes to look good.

The clothing "issue" is just a distraction. I don't believe anybody really cares. There are much more important issues at stack. But as long as the media can trash Sarah Palin, they don't have to delve into anything of substance about the other side.

...at stake, sorry.

Actually I agree, I don't care either. I'm just noting that a big deal was made about John Edward's hair cut. If it's a big deal, then I think the criticism needs to be consistent. If it's not a big deal, then it should be a big deal not matter which candidate you're dealing with. Much of politics is a distraction. And, again, both sides are equally guilty. Which is why I'm neither a Republican nor a Democrat.

I am a librarian, my "uniform" usually consists of Dockers and a button down shirt of one sort or another. Although I sometimes wear a polo shirt with the library logo on it.

Maybe east coast media might make a big deal about consignment clothing, I seriously doubt that west coast media would. We're just not that fashion conscious (outside of California).

Wow. R.L., you'd qualify as "first dude" where I worked. That's practically formal wear!

LOL.. it's about as formal as I get. I do have a suit and I've worn a tie with it: Weddings and funerals, baby... weddings and funerals.
