Thursday Thirteen

Thirteen reasons I have called my SenatorsSenate bill 2611 (Hagel/Martinez bill) will be called Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act if it passes. (Or Mexamerica.) We're not talking just about workers. There are 13 groups to think about. CIRA will have both amnesty (for current illegals) and a guest worker plan (legals). And a plan for all their extended families. These are the cumulative figures for the next 20 years. While our Senators dither and blather about agreeing on a "comprehensive plan" millions are scrambling this moment to get across the border so they can claim amnesty under this plan.

1. Amnesty for current illegals--10,000,000

2-3. Spouses and children of Amnesty recipients--6,000,000

4. Guest workers--20,280,000

5-6. Spouses and dependent children of guest workers--24,330,000

7-8. Siblings and adult children of newly legal immigrants listed above--5,080,000

9-10. Employment based visas with spouses and children--13,580,000

11-12. Parents of the newly naturalized citizens listed above--4,970,000 (his and hers)

13. The usual immigrants still allowed under our current laws--19,000,000

Like the enabling parent who never cuts the apron strings for its helpless adult child, the USA contributes to Mexico's poverty by employing 15% of its labor force who can then send money back home to keep the inept government afloat.

Great list. I truelly believe that if you aren't willing to do something (for example write your senators) you shouldn't gripe. It is just like people that didn't vote for the president, but want to voice their opinion about him.

Norma, I'm not questioning that these were the numbers provided, but rather that you or others are taking them at face value. It is ludicrous. There are only 100,000,000 Mexican left in Mexico. They will not all end up here. That's just the starting point of how idiotic this argument is.

Changing circumstances results in changing attitudes and decisions. At some point in Mexico, the population becomes better employed because there aren't as many workers. So wages go up. As wages go up, some who would have come don't, and others who did come, go home. Etc.

Like I said. Democrats miss this point in the discussion of tax policy. When taxes go down, it creates certain circumstances that actually lead to increased revenues long term. Well, we can't absolutely know the long term consequences of this action, but there are things we do know that help us to figure it out.

For instance, with a virtually open border, 100,000,000 Mexican didn't come over the last 20 years. Only 12 million did. Now do you see what I mean?

No comment on the list. It is too deep a controversial issue to discuss in someone's comments. I stand on the 5th. I don't want to be like the guy who was before me. No arguments here. :)

Randy--it is a 20 year projection. When illegal workers are counted today, the children aren't counted. 30 years ago, the INS estimated about 800,000 per year. I cited the source.

My T -13 is up...hope you come by to see how many you can guess.

Your T -13 is something that I won't comment on...politics

Wow... it's great that you are so involved in other peoples' rights. I applaud you. :)

It's certainly an issue that most people have a strong opinion on, one way or another!

Happy Thursday to you!

Randy, you're not taking into account the fact that in Mexico, crime, disease, and malnutrition keep the population down, and when they come here they breed like rabbits. Large numbers of the girls who come here get pregnant out of wedlock so they can drop an anchor baby after they get here.

One Scrappy Gal, I want to advise you that we are not "getting involved in someone else's rights." We are trying to save our own rights in the country that we have built. If someone breaks into my home, am I violating their right to live there by trying to protect my property?

Wow, that's quite a list. I can't say I agree with your take on the issue, but I admire you greatly for researching and voicing your concerns. Happy TT!

I'll not state an opinion OTHER than that I do believe that when you feel strongly about something, you definately SHOULD speak up to the people that CAN make a difference - and that's what you did by contacting your senator! I have written and/or called my senators on many issues and will continue to do so when things ire me! Well done Norma!!!

Unknown said...

I agree with you completely! This is a huge issue and needs to be addressed correctly! Good for you for pointing it out to those in charge. I need to do the same! Thanks for visiting my TT!

Good for you on actually doing something about it. We should all be so brave.

Anonymous said...

Wow, that's quite the list...and brave of you to hit on such a controvercial topic in a meme. I'll leave it at that. ;)

guppyman said...

I'll stand up and applaud you for calling... Our senators seem to have lost touch with reality. I'm truly at a loss as to who to vote for in November.... I won't vote for democrats... I know what they stand for, but I don't see a conservative option at this point either... just a bunch of useless liers....

The whole thing drives me crazy.

Deb @ Sugarfused said...

Hot topic that I'll not debate but I don't think anyone can deny the fact that those numbers are mind-boggling.

Thanks for dropping by my place today!

Controversial topic today! lol! I'll stay out of it and just say Happy Thursday and thanks for stopping by :)

i'm in canada, we don't have the number of illegals that you do, but we still have some. i'll be interested to see what happens in your country.

Very informative! :)
Thanks for stopping by my list too!

Interesting list. I'm in Canada so I'm not going to voice my thoughts on these issues. Happy Thursday.

I see a lot of hate in these comments. "Breed like rabbits?" WHAT does that mean??

Bottom line, these people are people. They are simply trying to escape a destitute country. What would you have them do? Starve? They don't get rich, they work menial jobs: farm worker, bus person, janitor, truck driver.. jobs that are low-paying and that few other people will touch. They don't take the skilled jobs, and they are only trying to live and eke out a meager living while sending most of the money back home to their families in Mexico.

I hate that this is even controversial. People deserve to live. It is easy for those of us who have much to look down our noses at those who have little.

My heart bleeds for those who have so little. But it bleeds more for the short-sighted greed that has become the defining characteristic of main-stream America.

Tina@ SendChocolateNow said...

Oh and really, thank you for visiting my T13. Just because I disagree doesn't mean I won't read yours. Dissent keeps this country great by expanding minds. ;oD

Norma said...

Too bad, TLC, that their own gov't doesn't care as much about them as you do. Why should Mexico clean up its act and take care of its citizens if you will do it?

If you don't like these numbers, how about these:

This bill includes:

In-state tuition for illegal aliens. Your kid has to pay full freight if they cross state lines, but the illegal alien who broke into the country doesn’t.

All temporary guest workers have to be paid the prevailing wage. American citizens do not have to be paid prevailing wage.

All agricultural guest workers under this bill cannot be fired by their employers except for what the bill calls “just cause.”
However, American agricultural workers can be fired for any reason.

Illegal aliens are made eligible for Social Security. Not only will they receive retirement benefits, but their children will receive survivor benefits should the parents pass away. This is at a time when we are trying to keep Social Security solvent for the next generation. [These numbers are stolen, because they are illegal workers--I am not eligible for SS because I have a teacher's pension]

Expands the visa lottery program, which is itself a questionable way to make visa distribution decisions.

Employers of illegal aliens get amnesty, too. Employers would be exempt from civil and criminal tax and criminal liability under immigration law. God forbid we hold employers accountable for helping illegal aliens break the law and being the magnet that has drawn them here for years.

Taxpayer dollars to radical immigrant-rights groups so they can help illegal aliens adjust their status. Millions of your tax dollars will go to the same groups that organized those rallies where people who came here illegally waved foreign flags and thumbed their noses at our laws.

How's that for a nose bleed.

interesting TT,
I do sometimes think we should talley up some of the costs and send a bill to Vincente Fox marked "past due" for education and medical services for his citizens. :)

I hope we work this issue out for all sides involved.

It's good to let those who call the shots know how you feel...it takes some time, but at least you can feel a part of the process...

Renee Nefe said...

I was thinking the other day that maybe it would be cheaper for us to just make Mexico part of the US. Then they would stop coming her as we would be paying for them anyway... but they could have jobs that US countries would put there.

I know there are probably a bazillion reasons why this wouldn't work and then there's all the drugs & civil wars & such. sigh

Jen said...

Dang, free in-state tuition? Can I move to Mexico for a couple of years and come back and be eligible? That's just messed up...

Thanks for stopping by!

Anonymous said...

Wow! Gutsy topic for TT! Way to go! Like another who's commented - I have been known to "wonder outloud" if there are U.S. Citizens who might be better off to move to Mexico to increase their benefit potential here in the U.S. I had a friend who did just that to get tuition for law school, no less!

-tnchick- said...

I've never been into politics and am not really all that educated on the issue. I do know this is a major problem and I do think someone needs to take care of it. I just don't enough about it ti discuss it :)

P.S. I always visit everyone who visits me and I try to visit as many as I can but with two kids, school, etc - some days I don't get to visit as many as i'd like.

Carol said...

Hi Norma - thanks for stopping by my TT. I agree with you. What message are we sending the world when we give amnesty, social security, food stamps, jobs and citizenship to people who have deliberately broken our laws. It has nothing to do with hatred or racism. I welcome immigrants who go through the proper channels to enter the U.S.A. But giving these folks amnesty and rights of citizens is a slap in the face to all the LEGAL immigrants who have done it the law-abiding way.

Anonymous said...

Hi Norma! You have a very serious topic for TT this week. I understand your sentiments. You do have a point. :)

I plan to work as a Special Education Teacher there after at least a year or two's experience here. Do not worry, I am not going there illegally, and I'm not from Mexico but does it matter? At least I'll be going there with legal papers. :)

Norma said...

Don't worry JK, I'm not talking about you, but people who are breaking our laws--in fact, they keep people like you out.

Anonymous said...

I'm not going to discuss this either, since I'm from Norway and we have different borders and problems, and our country is so much smaller and so is our population. But have a nice weekend will you!?! ;)

I've been watching what's been happening in the United States. I haven't heard much about the Act yet, so thank you for the summary. :)
