Media try to blame GOP for racial divide in Missouri

While the progressive on-line news sources like the Daily Beast and Huffington Post (and some yellow journalism rags like the New York Times) try to stoke hatred for the GOP as racists, let's remember St. Louis and Ferguson are controlled by elected Democrats. The much maligned prosecutor McCulloch is a powerful player in Missouri Democratic politics. Also, most famous African American political and media leaders of national fame whose names I would recognize have been Republicans--Martin Luther King, Jr., James Weldon Johnson, Edward Brooke, Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, Thomas Sowell, Shelby Steele, Clarence Thomas, Booker T. Washington, Walter E. Williams, Sojourner Truth, Jackie Robinson, Snerdly (Rush Limbaugh's call screener) and Eldridge Cleaver, to name a few. Frederick Douglass was the first African American to have his name on a national party nomination (Republican) in 1888. Their writings and speeches may have set the world on fire, but they didn't burn down their community's businesses.

Ferguson blinders—Cornel West

Professor Cornel West appeared on CNN International to give his take on Ferguson, and said right at the outset, “Ferguson signifies the end of the age of Obama. It’s a very sad end. We began with tremendous hope and we end with great despair.”

Despite the huge drop in crime and violence in black neighborhoods in the last 2 decades due to better policing and stiffer penalties, he then he went on to blame the "Jim Crow" justice system--a system designed and carried out by the Democrat party.

Firearm-related homicides declined 39%, from 18,253 in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011 according to the Department of Justice. About 50% of those not killed were young, black males. There were over 1.5 million firearm non-fatalities in 1993 compared to about 478,000 in 2011.

When it couldn't destroy black progress, the party invented the War on Poverty—now trillions spent and 126 transfer programs.

Really, very few people were looting and burning--and they were organized by and sent in by outsiders with a political agenda.

Meanwhile, in Kenya where our President has family

teachers are being killed, civil servants are fleeing, Muslim terrorists Al-Shabaab are attacking.

http://www.irinnews.org/report/100891/terrorism-hits-education-health-in-kenya-s-marginalized-mandera

“The northern Kenya region has historically been marginalized by successive governments, leaving access to basic social services such as education and healthcare limited. While demand for teachers stands at 20,000, there are only about 12,000 in the region, according to KNUT.

UNICEF says about 80 percent of girls in North Eastern Province are not enrolled in school.

The doctor-to-patient ratio is 1.0 to 100,000 in the larger northern Kenya region, according to Fredrick Oluga, a member of the advisory council at the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPPDU). Nationally, according to government figures, the ratio is 1.0 to 20,000. The global recommendation is one doctor for every 1,000 patients.

Indicative of the level of need in northern Kenya is the dependence on civil servants from other parts of the country. KMPPDU’s Oluga added that there are just 41 doctors in northern Kenya, forcing them to be on call 24 hours.”

Jammies

Pajams by 7pm = A successful evening.

It’s never the obvious

I saw on a liberal site that the Ebola scare in the U.S. was induced by the GOP and cost Obama the Senate. Really? The media (which had a melt down over Ebola and really overdid it) are in Obama's pocket and the CDC and the HHS are controlled by Obama, and their spokespersons were all over the media. And the charges of racism when a black African died and the white Americans didn't? That was the GOP? The nurse who decided to violate her quarantine was a Democrat, right?  Now if they want to discuss the outsiders in Ferguson diverting attention of Obama's power grab over immigration, we could have a "conversation."

Our house guest this week-end is a citizen of Guinea in West Africa, which along with Sierra Leone is still having outbreaks of Ebola according to WHO.  However, he has lived in Haiti for the last two years.  He did note that when he arrived in Miami he was questioned closely by security and then allowed to pass.  He said his mother had died in July, and his sister urged him not to come home for the funeral, because then he wouldn’t have been allowed to return to Haiti.

I write because. . .

Granite vs. Formica

Does anyone else object to remodeling with an eye to "resale" years later? I just don't like paying for something that maybe, possibly someone else wants and I don't. Specifically, granite counter tops. Yes, I confess, I like Formica. There. I've said it. Granite is costly, heavy, it stains, needs maintenance, and I think it's difficult to keep bacteria free. The only thing worse is marble tile--which is what we have now. We lived in our other house 34 years; our early improvements in the 60s and 70s were old fashioned and out of date by the time we moved in 2002. The new owners ripped out most of what we'd done, with the exception of the extremely feminine wallpaper in our daughter's room (and they put their son in that room!) and then they got a divorce! This link is to a commercial site, but I like it.

Shia LaBeouf’s performance for art

Sexual assault of men by women usually doesn't get much attention (it’s actually rather common in prisons as reported about half of sexual assaults are by female staff), but Shia LaBeouf claiming he was raped during his performance art seems a bit odd even with our gender wars thirsty media. Or maybe the fan just considered it her performance art? Maybe he wasn’t getting enough attention just by being strange? At least it got him in Time and USA Today.

Chuck Schumer spoke only to Democrats; the rest of us knew this

“Democrats blew the opportunity the American people gave them [in 2008],” declared the senior Senator from New York. At the time, the middle class had just experienced the economic shock of their lives, and the election was a mandate to change direction from Bush-era economic policies, Schumer told the National Press Club. “We took their mandate,” Schumer explained, “and put all focus on the wrong problem – healthcare reform.” But then he stepped in it even deeper and said, “We were in the middle of a recession. People were hurting and saying, 'What about me? I'm losing my job. It's not health care that bothers me. What about me?’" Even worse, Schumer argued, the program only provided benefits to “about 5 percent of the electorate,” while “only about a third of the uninsured are even registered to vote.”  He will pay dearly for telling the truth.  You just don’t “underbus” the President—only he gets that privilege.

Eight-five percent of the people had health insurance, and 87% of those who had it were satisfied. Obamacare benefits 5 percent of the population. “The costs for this system will be borne mainly by the middle class; the wealthy can afford a wide range of options, while most of the government benefits will apply to the small percentage of the population.

See more at: http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/columns/2014/11/28/how-obama-marginalized-democratic-party?

Unfortunately, Schumer he was supporting O-care when he actually could have done something, and his party remembers it well. Politics, such fun, innit?

Michael Brown and what ifs

If Michael Brown had been shot by a black police officer, and everything else was the same, including the investigation, we would have never heard of him (rate is actually higher because about 1 in 4 police officers were members of a racial or ethnic minority in 2007 according to BJS); if Michael Brown had been white and shot by a police officer of any ethnic group after knocking over a store owned by an Asian and everything else was the same, including the investigation, we would have never heard of him--except hate crime might have been added to the list. That's how I know who and why Ferguson is such a big story. Obama is bringing in 5 million + illegals to take jobs and benefits and blacks will be hurt the most. Some other crisis is needed to cover the problem of Obama's power grab.

Coffee vs. Chocolate for caffeine

Woot! “A typical cacao bean contains less than 1/20th of the caffeine present in coffee . . .” Caffeine Content

According to Livestrong.com dark chocolate has heart and blood pressure benefits:

Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate

. . .  dark chocolate, which is packed with antioxidants known as flavanols. These antioxidants help the body's cells resist damage. Specifically, flavanols are believed to improve vascular health by lowering blood pressure and improving blood flow to the brain and heart. Flavanols can also help blood platelets be less sticky so that they don't form clots as easily. The higher the cacao content, the more flavanols the chocolate will contain. When choosing a dark chocolate, look for a high cacao content with the least amount of sugar or other ingredients that add calories.

According to the Live Well web site by Jillian

Caffeine in Coffee

Eight ounces of generic brewed coffee averages 95 milligrams of caffeine, according to the National Nutrient Database. The range is 102 to 200 milligrams. A 16-ounce cup of coffee -- the “grande” or medium size in most coffee shops -- contains 200 to 300 milligrams of caffeine. A coffee shop’s standard 1-ounce shot of espresso averages 75 milligrams of caffeine, while generic brewed espresso averages 40 milligrams. A 16-ounce vanilla latte contains 150 milligrams of caffeine.

Decaffeinated Coffee

Decaffeinated coffee does contain some caffeine. In a study published in the October 2006 issue of the "Journal of Analytical Toxicology," University of Florida researchers found that 16-ounce cups of brewed regular decaffeinated coffee, a medium coffee at most coffee shops, contained anywhere from 3 to 13.9 milligrams of caffeine.

Caffeine in Chocolate

A 1-ounce square of unsweetened baking chocolate contains 23 milligrams of caffeine. A large 3.5-ounce bar of very dark chocolate, which contains 70 percent to 85 percent cocoa, averages 80 milligrams of caffeine. Regular dark chocolate, with 50 percent to 69 percent cocoa, contains around 70 milligrams in a 3.5-ounce bar. The same amount of plain milk chocolate contains 20 milligrams of caffeine. Hot cocoa averages 9 milligrams of caffeine per 8-ounce cup.

From comments at Jillian’s site.

Journal of Chromatographic Science, Vol. 46, pp 892-899 (2008)

Standard Reference Material 2384 Baking Chocolate from the National Institute of Standards & Technology (Gaithersburg, MD), 90 % cocoa solids, was determined to have 26 mg/g (2.6% by weight) theobromine and 2.4 mg/g caffeine.

Food Research International, Vol 42, pp 707–716 (2009)

Chocolate with 60% cocoa solids (from a leading Croatian chocolate manufacturer) was determined to have 9 mg/g (0.9% by weight) theobromine and 0.8 mg/g caffeine.

Even taking the lower, latter figure for caffeine content, this translates into 23 mg of caffeine in 1 oz (28.35 g) of chocolate containing 60% cocoa solids (e.g. bittersweet baking chocolate). “

Like everything else on the internet, people disagree on the amount of caffeine in chocolate—some claiming there is none naturally, that it is added.

Q. How much caffeine is in Chocolate?

A. The small amount of caffeine present in chocolate occurs naturally in the cocoa bean, unlike the caffeine in soft caffeine drinks which is added during the manufacturing process.

Here caffeine are some comparisons that may be helpful:

Coffee 8 fl. oz. 65-120 mg

Cola-type soft drinks 12 oz. 30-55 mg

Milk Chocolate 1 oz. 5-10 mg

Dark Chocolate 1.4 oz. 7-50 mg

The amounts of caffeine in specific HERSHEY'S chocolate products are listed on the Chocolate Products Caffeine page.

Maybe I’ll go with this explanation:

“Chocolate derived from cocoa beans is a weak stimulant. It contains two stimulating methylxanthines (a class of alkaloid molecules), a significant amount of theobromine (and theophylline) and a small amount of caffeine. The slight stimulatory effect of chocolate is it seems as much due to the combination of theobromine and theophylline than caffeine.

Generally, caffeine and theobromine have very different effects on different people. Theobromine is relatively mild and helps elevate serotonin levels producing a really nice side effect of feeling good over a longer period of time. Caffeine is a stronger stimulant and acts relatively quickly as a wake-up drug. Compared to the caffeine, the theobromine has about one-quarter the stimulating power.

However, chocolate contains too little of these compounds to create a similar effect to portion equal to coffee. A typical cacao bean contains less than 1/20th of the caffeine present in coffee (from zero to 1000 parts per million of caffeine per bean).”

Asian solidarity or duped young people?

Shout out to all my brothers and sisters of all nations out there supporting. I love and appreciate you!

Ferguson and St. Louis voters have freely elected a Democratic party power structure, and there is not a shred of evidence, as determined by the Grand Jury, that there was anything improper in the behavior of the police. All U.S. government studies show that relations between police and blacks has been improving for 20 years, and violence has dropped dramatically, making black communities safer  (Police-Public Contact Survey). On the other hand, there has been a great deal of illegal behavior by some residents and outsiders in looting, burning and destruction of property, some of it owned by Asians and blacks. These people want to undo the progress of the last 20 years. Is this really what the "Asian Solidarity" group wants?

Joan is thankful for . . .

I give thanks --

  • For the unconditional love of family. It provides me with the security to discover who and what I am and who and what I can become.
  • For the gift of time. Each hour of each day and night offers new opportunity for me to reach out, take, give, be, and grow.
  • For the beauty of the Earth. It encourages my heart and rescues me from the tedium of daily life.
  • For the full use of my senses. The ability to see, touch, taste, smell, and hear allows me to become one with God’s creation.
  • For my community of faith. Through the Christian church the noble, unselfish, and servant nature of humanity finds voice as we support each other in the quest for meaning and purpose in life and opportunities to contribute to the betterment of society and the building of the Kingdom of God here on the Earth.
  • For my freedoms: I have freedom for living given me by my God. It is only through Him that the unselfish, tender, and noble parts of me can withstand the onslaught of the self-serving and callous nature struggling to emerge from within. I have freedom for living given me by my country. It was founded on the principal that all of us are created equal, and I can express beliefs and live as my own conscience dictates. I have freedom for living given me by my family and friends. Because they love me, they accept the unlovely parts of me and support me when I face adversity so that I can emerge on the other side of the conflict a stronger and more deserving creature.
  • For my heritage. The long line of love and commitment goes back generations – the love for God and the respect for others and self that I learned by example.
  • For those whose lives have intersected with and impacted mine. From the aunts and uncles of my childhood, to colleagues of bygone years, to eager students, to fellow worshippers, to thoughtful bloggers – they have all had a part in making me who I am.
  • For those whose lives I have been able to touch. I have seen: the visible light when a student finally succeeds in a difficult task or understands a complex concept, the smile flashed when another person hears his/her worth affirmed, the comfort found by sharing a common interest, concern, or grief.
  • For a searching mind and spirit. Life-long learning allows me to live many lives in one.
  • For communication. How lonely the road would be could we not share thoughts, ideas, and beliefs with others.
  • For a comfortable home and adequate food.
  • For a modicum of financial security. My life need not revolve around meeting basic needs. Free of this burden, I can fly.

Joan is a retired teacher who lives in Georgia—we followed each other as bloggers and now we are friends on Facebook.  What’s interesting about this list (reposted at FB from a 2007 blog entry) is that only the last 2 refer to anything material—which I think is how most retirees feel.

A note of thanksgiving from our step-nephew

Not all moms are perfect, nor are all dads, but without them we wouldn't be here to even express an opinion. I got lucky. I have four sets of parents. My mom and dad, my stepmom and stepdad, my in-laws, (both passed) as a result of my marriage, and the "Big Brother" organization, Big Brother (also passed) and his wife. Each one of them did, and continues to love me in their own special way. I don't deserve any of it, but am sure glad God knew ...I was going to be a handful and positioned eight good people along the way to coach, mentor, and guide me into becoming the best person I could be. Thanks (names in the original). Yes, it's almost Thanksgiving, and this man has much to be thankful for in his life. Author on the right in the photo.

Message from a black Ferguson resident

My Name is William G. Lillas....

I wanted to clear up a few black and white questions and answers. The things I state are facts. They are not downloaded from some media website, not propaganda, just observations from a 83 year old black man, born in America:
"I was told by my parents (yes, a married man and woman with my last name), that I was n*****. We lived in “N***** Town” in a small Texas town, no A/C, grass growing through the floor, no car, no TV. We washed our bodies with lye soap that my mother made, by hand. I thought I was a n*****, until I graduated high school, went to college, did an enlistment in the Army, and got a job. I am now retired, own my own home, have 6 children by ONE WOMAN, and we all have the same last name. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts, a Master’s Degree in Sociology. My retirement, VA disability from combat in the Korean War (I only have one leg), and part-time pay in a local college, is about $125,000 a year. From dirt poor n*****, to old, black, proud American.

Yes, I am black, and I can say “n*****”, because I understand the true meaning of the word.

Let’s clear up a few things about the Michael Brown incident.

-Fact: It is not called "shoplifting or stealing", it's called "robbery", which is a felony. Brown stole something and assaulted someone, that means ROBBERY. It’s on video, and it’s a fact. Not shoplifting, not theft, not “lifting” a few cigars, but ROBBERY!
-Michael Brown, like Trayvon, was portrayed by the media as a “little black boy”, cute little headphones, and his cap and gown photo, gunned down by a ruthless police assassin, executed by “whitey”. First, I have never seen a cop drag a person into their car’s driver door to arrest them. So, let us be clear, Michael Brown was a n*****; a sorry assed, criminal, hoodlum, n*****. Nobody wants to say that, but I will. He had a criminal record a mile long, was known for numerous assaults, robberies, including the one you saw with your own eyes, and still refuse to call it a robbery. He was, like so many others, living a life that he thought he was “entitled” to, just for being alive. Gangsta rap, weed, drinking, guns, and those stupid-assed low profile rims, makes him some kind of bad-ass n*****.

I have fought communist Chinese and North Korean soldiers in the 1950’s with more honor than that n*****. Yep, I peeled potatoes and shot communists. That’s the only job a n***** soldier could get.

Rodney King? Black Riots!

Trayvon? Black Riots!

-Hurricane Katrina? Black Riots! Stealing TV’s, designer clothes, etc.

O.J. Simpson kills white man and white woman, found NOT GUILTY? Did white folks riot? Nope!

In fact, when is the last time white people rioted? Civil War, maybe? That’s because they are, relatively, civilized people, much like many black Americans. Protesting is one thing, hell, I’m all for it. Even if you are an ignorant idiot, you have a right to protest.

-Stop only showing the young black "cap and gown" photos of Michael. Charles Manson may have a few of those laying around, as well. Show the n***** "gangsta" photos of the "poor unarmed teenager" (grown man) pics that have been removed from his Facebook page, holding the loaded pistol, smoking weed, with a mouthful of money.

-Militarization? The stupid-assed media that publicizes this has no idea what “militarization” really is. Cops wear helmets and vests, and drive armored vehicle because unemployed n*****s thrown bricks at them, moron! You put on an "Adam 12" uniform and walk down the streets of Ferguson during the criminal riots. I can guarantee that you'll jump into the first armored "military tank" that you see.

-You only "want the police" when you "need the police", otherwise, you mock and fear what you do not understand about the police. And by the way, the police are trained to take your shit, but I wouldn’t fuck around with those Army National Guard, they aren’t as well disciplined “culturally” to take your shit like police do every day. They will ventilate your black asses with M-16s, with military precision and extreme prejudice.

-And finally, the way we protest and demand justice, is run down the streets breaking shit, looting stores, and acting like a bunch of untrained monkeys? Hell, after Rodney King, criminal n*****s were actually killing people, thinking they were entitled to be worse criminals than they already were. For those black criminals that do that, you are a disgrace to your race, inflamed by idiots like Al Sharpton, instead of listening to logic from proud black Americans, like Bill Cosby, Samuel Jackson, Colin Powell, Allen West, me, etc.

-You blame white people for your ignorance, criminal acts, unemployed laziness, etc.

-You blame white people for 89% of the prisons in America being full of blacks. They did nothing wrong, the racists white cops framed them all, right? No chance at school, no chance for college, military, employment?
BULL SHIT!

-More n*****s kill n*****s, than n*****s killing whites, whites killing n*****s, and whites killing whites….COMBINED. I find this astounding.

-It's not white peoples' faults, the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by a white man years ago. You can go to school, get a job, buy a house, and vote, JUST LIKE WHITE FOLKS!!!! You are not a slave, you are not discriminated against! Slavery is abolished, and nobody alive today, was alive when it was popular. Get over it! You are discriminated against because you are a criminal, sorry-assed n*****. Otherwise, black Americans are treated like everyone else.
-If you choose to create "baby daddy and baby mama", and fake disabilities as an excuse for laziness to draw social security disability…… instead of husband, wife, family, job, mortgage, it's YOUR FAULT, not white folks. And there are a lot of proud black Americans that will tell you the same, as I AM ONE OF THEM!!!

-Remember, the way you act on the camera, is remembered by everyone who sees it. They will never forget it. It shows them how you, as the black race, respond to situations that don’t particularly go the way you think they should. It will become a reference standard, something they expect from you when the next media report doesn’t go your way. Stop being stupid n*****s, and be a proud black American. My parents raised me well, but they were wrong about one thing, I am not a n*****.
I will not be around long. While my mind is still sharp, and my aim is still good, my body is eaten away with cancer. It started in the prostate, and is spreading rapidly. After I die, I have asked my children to publish my writings, and include my name. Although I am not expecting any miracles, I can only hope that Americans will stop blaming color, start blaming criminals, and see people for what the y really are. We have too many countries that want us dead. We should not be fighting each other.

"William G. Lillas"

The gentle giant wasn’t

I think they (the media) need to stop identifying Michael Brown with a photo of him in a cap and gown as an unarmed teenager. He was high, violent and huge (6'5", 289 lbs), had assaulted and robbed a small Asian store owner for something he easily could have paid for, and was struggling with a 5'10"policeman who received a call about the robbery, reaching in his car for the officer's gun when he was first shot while punching the police officer. For someone not high, a flesh wound to the hand probably would have stopped him, but he kept going struggling for the gun. That is NOT an unarmed, gentle giant. It's probably time for the media to leak the rest of his record now that the grand jury is over. After listening to the "step-father" (it’s never been clear if he is married to Michael’s mother or just lives with her) rouse the crowd of rioters to loot and burn Monday night, we also know his role model--maybe his record should be checked too. Where else but in the media do violent thugs get this much attention and sympathy?

Breakfast make up

We had lunch at the OSU golf course dining room for our son’s birthday yesterday and of course, I had to celebrate with some decadent chocolate cake. So today I'm making up for my indiscretion with a baked sweet potato for breakfast--769% of Vit. A requirement and 65% Vit. C. Low in sodium, and very low in saturated fat (until I add salt and butter) and cholesterol. It is also a good source of fiber, Vitamin B6, potassium and manganese. Blogs are pretty good for posting about what you eat, because others find that more interesting than Ferguson or illegal immigration.

Philly and football time(:

We’re hosting a Haitian doctor on Friday, and I’m not sure what to fix for dinner.  In fact, I learned Sunday that he isn’t Haitian, he is an African working in Haiti.  Recently we hosted someone from Michigan, and she was a gluten free guest, and fortunately I had made a big pot of homemade vegetable soup, although she didn’t eat any of the hot rolls. We met her at Lakeside this summer and she is hoping to go on the next Haitian mission sponsored by our church.

I have no idea who the person on the right is, but on the left is our 46 year old birthday boy wearing his braces.

The crimes against Ferguson

This wasn't a "protest" it was nation-wide, well-organized crime by thugs and criminals hoping to create a revolution a la the 1960s--like grandpa's. The people of Ferguson have been the victims of these criminals. Our president's address just added to the suspicion and frustration. Violence and crime in our nation has never been lower--so crime must be hyped to instill fear in voters. The black-officer-kills-black-felon rate was 32 per 100,000 black officers in 1998, (lastest year I could find stats, but violent crime was higher then) which is higher than the white-officer kills-black-felon rate of 14 per 100,000 white officers. (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2001)

http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2014/11/24/president-obama-delivers-statement-ferguson-grand-jurys-decision

But what is also true is that there are still problems and communities of color aren't just making these problems up.  Separating that from this particular decision, there are issues in which the law too often feels as if it is being applied in discriminatory fashion. I don't think that's the norm. I don't think that's true for the majority of communities or the vast majority of law enforcement officials. But these are real issues.  And we have to lift them up and not deny them or try to tamp them down. What we need to do is to understand them and figure out how do we make more progress.  And that can be done.

Green is rain, purple snow—for busy travel day

This is the forecast for Wednesday, November 26, 2014.  Not great for travelers.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/wp/2014/11/24/east-coast-timing-and-impacts-for-wednesdays-winter-storm/

Democrats go after the bad

A caller to the Michael Medved show (98.9 fm Columbus) today commented that when something bad happens, it's good for the Democrats because they are perpetual ambulance chasers.

  • More single moms? Vote Democrat.
  • Neighborhood housing stock collapsing? Vote Democrat.
  • 11 million illegals taking American jobs? Vote Democrat.
  • Bad infrastructure? Vote Democrat.
  • Gays want to marry and straights don't? Vote Democrat.
  • VA hospital long wait list? Vote Democrat.
  • IRS and NSA and Secret Service scandals? Vote Democrat.
  • Health care too expensive because of red tape, fraud, and regulations? Vote Democrat.

The ones who cause the problems think they should get to fix them! And somehow, the public buys this gruberazation, because maybe the voters really are stupid.

Monday Memories—first and second birthdays

With two birthdays and a national holiday falling within the same week, it used to be sort of hectic the 3rd or 4th week in November. There was awhile when we did a lot of togetherness; now we get together on Thanksgiving, and possibly a separate night out if anyone is free.  This photo is their first co-birthday (12 months and 3 days apart).  I think as soon as I let go of Phil he went into the cake with both hands.  It was a party at Aunt Jeanne’s in Indianapolis and many people came.

The famous mayor of DC has died

Marion Barry, the beloved Washington DC politician has died. Here are some of his more famous quotes, lifted from another post.

"If you take out the killings, Washington actually has a very, very low crime rate."

"First, it was not a strip bar, it was an erotic club. And second, what can I say? I'm a night owl."

"What right does Congress have to go around making laws just because they deem it necessary?"

"I read a funny story about how the Republicans freed the slaves. The Republicans are the ones who created slavery by law in the 1600's. Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves and he was not a Republican."

"The laws in this city are clearly racist. All laws are racist. The law of gravity is racist."

And perhaps his most infamous quote...
"The b*tch set me up!"

Peter Kreeft’s Practical Theology

I am a Protestant with Anabaptist baptism (1950) and current Lutheran confirmation (1976), so my TBR list hasn't included Thomas Aquinas. If you've had seminary training, is he ever mentioned in a positive light? (Revelation is not found only in Scripture or only in church tradition; revelation is a divine source of knowledge of which the Bible and the church are channels).

Well, here's a Christmas gift book suggestion for the heavy duty thinkers and pastors on your Christmas book list : "Practical theology; spiritual direction from Saint Thomas Aquinas." Ignatius Press, 2014. It is topically arranged, with each page a brief excerpt from Summa Theologiae (4,000 pages), with Peter Kreeft's annotation and explanation. I would have preferred 365 pieces of wisdom rather than 359, but reviewers don't get to design the title. Kreeft has made Aquinas brief, livable and personal, although not exactly lovable.

Topics include the problem of evil; reconciling justice and mercy; angels and demons; the purpose of morality; evil and ignorance; how Christ's death opened heaven; what is the significance of Jesus being crucified between 2 thieves; qualifications for religious teachers; how do the Beatitudes relate to the 10 Commandments, and so forth.

I don't claim to understand all this--but sometimes it's just a relief to get away from "16 ways to pray in the car," or "I'm spiritual but not religious" type books.

Thursday Thirteen--Better the dumper than the dumpee

Possibly my memory fails on unpleasant thoughts, but I think I was only "dumped" once by a boyfriend. However, it was a valuable experience. A life lesson, as it were. I learned it is better to be the dumper than the dumpee. For instance, it is better to
  1. buy the new tires before one of the balding set goes bad on a dark night on the free-way

  2. lose 5 lbs before it becomes 20

  3. withdraw from the course rather than get a B or C

  4. take the lower fixed rate rather than the higher with the risk when investing, and the higher fixed rate rather than the adjustable lower one when buying a house

  5. stop the exercise when the first hitch in your get-along starts

  6. quit choir before they notice you can't sing a note

  7. volunteer for the job no one else wants

  8. fix old favorites for family dinners

  9. use the rest stop even if you don't have to go

  10. make sure the windows are closed if you plan to go out

  11. carry a list of prescriptions with you, so when they ask each time at the doctor's office, you'll know

  12. be the first to offer when the hostess says, "who would like to bring. . ." so you have the best choice

Western Civilization

“Western civilization is the envy of the globe. It has given to the world universally accepted understandings of human rights (rooted in Judeo-Christian principles), created standards for art, music, and literature that have never been equaled, and originated political and social systems that have spread all across the planet.

Unfortunately, the fog of political correctness now obscures these and other truths about Western civilization. Leftists and Islamic jihadists find common cause in assailing Western "colonialism," "imperialism," and "racism" as its defining characteristics. Guilt-ridden Western leaders and public figures speak of their cultural patrimony in disparaging terms they would never dare to use about a non-Western culture. And in the academy, "multicultural"-minded professors flatter students into believing they have nothing really to learn from Sophocles or Shakespeare.” from product description, Everything you should know--but PC professors won't teach--about our Western heritage

Fortunately, when I was at Manchester College (now Manchester University) my western civ professor was Dr. Gladdys Muir.  I never got the nonsense taught today in many colleges.  She was wonderful.

Gladdys Muir, peace studies pioneer, was born into a loving family who nurtured her in many ways, including art and music. Although she was described as a shy person in her youth, she had an inner strength and courage that drew her to teaching - a career that spanned 52 years at LaVerne College and then at Manchester College.

In 1947 Muir proposed that programs for the study of international conflict be established at each of the Brethren-related colleges. The Peace Studies Institute at Manchester College was the first program in the world to provide a major in peace studies and was a model for dozens of peace and conflict studies programs in the late 1960s. http://yellowbrickjourney.blogspot.com/2008/07/gladdys-muir.html (a diary kept in 2008 for the Church of the Brethren 300th year anniversary)

How the rest of the country sees the voters of NYC

Here's an interesting letter from "the rest of the country" to the voters in Manhattan, NY:

"By per capita income, Manhattan is the richest county in the country. In New York, and in Manhattan specifically, you have put in place more government programs to address poverty and income inequality than has any other state or locality. You have higher taxes than any other jurisdiction. You have a vast array of housing programs, from extensive low-income public housing, to rent regulation, to multiple “affordable housing” initiatives. Your welfare programs are the nation’s most generous. You have the most generous Medicaid program, too. And you spend almost double the national average per student on K-12 education.

Yet, even with all those programs and all that spending, according to Census Bureau statistics, Manhattan’s poverty rate is above the national average. . ." Read the whole letter--really good..

http://www.city-journal.org/2014/eon1114fm.html

One of the better comments on the letter that really reflects on trying to reason with liberals:

“There is no hope that this message will get across. Theirs is not merely a political persuasion: it is a religious belief akin to Islam in its all-encompassing nature. It is impervious to logic and the lessons of reality. It controls every aspect of their lives: personal, social, and political. It is culturally deadly and is quite incurable.”

One commenter blamed Fox News for the author’s viewpoint.  Boy! Doesn’t that sound familiar.

Egg shell plaintiffs and non-victims on college campuses

The whole article, Microaggression Farce by Heather MacDonald is worth reading, however, since most won’t take the time, I just site her final 2 paragraphs, because it touches on some serious issues beyond academe:

“The universities’ encouragement of victimology has wider implications beyond the campus. The same imperative to repress any acknowledgment of black academic underachievement as the cause of black underrepresentation in higher education is more fatefully at work in repressing awareness of disproportionate black criminality as the cause of black overrepresentation in the criminal-justice system. When a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, shot an unarmed black teen in August 2014, for example, the media suppressed any information about the incident that complicated its favored narrative about police brutality, all the while pumping out strained stories about racism in law enforcement and public life more generally. The result was days of violence, looting, and arson, from a populace that had been told at every opportunity that it is the target of ubiquitous discrimination.

Colleges today are determined to preserve in many of their students the thin skin and solipsism of adolescence, rather than turning them into dispassionate adults. They build ever more monumental bureaucracies to indulge those traits. By now, of course, many of the adults running colleges are indistinguishable from their eggshell plaintiff students. The rest of us bear the costs, in the maintenance of public policies founded on an equally spurious victimology.”

CCHD director under fire

“Several Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) grantees are affiliates of Interfaith Worker Justice (IWJ), a worker advocacy group whose leadership is full of individuals who promote abortion and homosexuality, and many who are committed Marxist socialists, according to a report by the Lepanto Institute.”

https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/cchd-head-sits-on-board-of-group-while-he-oversees-grants-to-its-affiliates

“In Fiscal Year 2014-2015, six IWJ affiliates received CCHD grants totaling $280,000, the Lepanto report said.

They include Northwest Arkansas Workers' Justice Center ($50,000), Center for Worker Justice of Eastern Iowa ($45,000), Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en la Lucha ($70,000), New Labor Education & Training Institute ($40,000), Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York ($50,000), and Workers' Dignity Project ($25,000).”

Shadeism in Telemundo and Univision

The whitest media in the U.S. are Telemundo and Univision--both are applauding Obama's illegal behavior. If you've ever seen a mixed race (Indian/European, aka mestizo) performer on those channels, let me know. I'll want to update my blogs about this travesty of racism. Long before cable, our regular broadcast media had blacks, Hispanics, women, disabled in front of the camera--even back in the 1960s. Telemundo is owned by NBC; Univision is headquartered in NYC.

"He owed us," they angrily reported. What do they owe the millions who have crossed the border--besides making them consumers of their Spanish language advertisers, of course.

Media and Bill Cosby and Bill Clinton scandals

The only thing I'm absolutely sure about is we'll never know the truth about Bill Cosby. The same charges were brought against Bill Clinton, and the main stream press blamed the women. Now in a big reversal, the celebrity is being blamed and smeared by the media. Maybe it's racism, or a cover of bigger stories. Who can tell--we're so manipulated. We've been lied to so often about sex, money, power, celebrities and politics, uncovering what happened 30-40 years ago won't be easy, and do we even want to know? You younger people don't remember what it was like to finally see a black person performing on TV as someone other than a dancer or clown (Cosby in "I Spy", 1965-68). And the millions of families he helped get through those teen years. I weep for him, us and the truth.

Fetal cells that stay behind in Mom—forever

Fetal microchimerism. Abortion could be behind the huge increase in autoimmune diseases in women. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20607042

Summary: “Fetal microchimerism occurs in normal human reproduction and is a relatively new discovery in biology. Recent data in the scientific and medical literature indicates that some of the autoimmune diseases that show a predilection for women in their child-bearing years and beyond are linked to fetal microchimerism from previous pregnancies. The pathological role of fetal microchimeric progenitor immature T cells in autoimmune disease in women is explored. Fetal microchimerism is increased in women who had a termination of pregnancy and may be associated with the development of autoimmune disease later on in life. Furthermore, the consistently rising incidence of autoimmune diseases in women over the past four decades may be attributed to the increase in the utilization of abortion.”

Whatever happened to free-spirited, open minded college students?

“From freewheelin’ to ban-happy, from askers of awkward questions to suppressors of offensive speech, in the space of a generation. My showdown with the debate-banning Stepfords at Oxford and the pre-crime promoters at Cambridge echoed other recent run-ins I’ve had with the intolerant students of the 21st century. I’ve been jeered at by students at the University of Cork for criticising gay marriage; cornered and branded a ‘denier’ by students at University College London for suggesting industrial development in Africa should take precedence over combating climate change; lambasted by students at Cambridge (again) for saying it’s bad to boycott Israeli goods. In each case, it wasn’t the fact the students disagreed with me that I found alarming — disagreement is great! – it was that they were so plainly shocked that I could have uttered such things, that I had failed to conform to what they assume to be right, that I had sought to contaminate their campuses and their fragile grey matter with offensive ideas.” Samizdat Quote of the Day

Brendan O’Neill

Things appear to be the same on British campuses—Cambridge, Oxford,Cork,  London--as American.

Obama’s lawless action on amnesty

Why should we believe any promises/assurances the president said last night? Twenty plus times he said he wouldn't do that; in 2009 he claimed we could keep our insurance and doctors. He lies, lies, lies, then parses the lies. If he doesn't like a law, he just goes around it or ignores it. He claims 5 million is not blanket amnesty, that these visa over stayers and border jumpers will have to do x-y-z, that until Congress acts, he must do this overreaching and violate the Constitution.

So if Congress does act in Obama's last 2 years, he'll just veto it; if there are 10 million, he'll just override what he said last night. The man can't be trusted. If you are an O-supporter, remember the next President may be a Republican and decide to undo some of your favorite causes because Obama has shown how to do it.

Senator Barack Obama helped kill immigration reform. "Obama was part of the bipartisan group of senators who began meeting in 2005 on comprehensive immigration reform. But last summer [2007], with the presidential nominating race well under way, Obama backed 11th-hour amendments - supported by labor, immigrant rights, and clergy groups - that Republicans saw as imperiling the fragile compromise. None of those measures passed. But Obama was part of a 49-to-48 majority that voted to end after five years a temporary worker program that had been a cornerstone of the immigration deal. The vote, backed by labor, was seen as a major setback to bipartisan negotiations." (Christian Science Monitor) He couldn't be trusted then, can't be trusted now.

John McCain and Ted Kennedy had been working on a bipartisan immigration reform bill since 2005, but Democrats took control of Congress in 2007 and decided they needed a divided Congress to whip up emotion and more votes from Hispanics; if the solution were bipartisan, then that might not happen.

Although Obama talks up the tragedy of children and parents (anchor babies) appealing to Hispanics, students and workers from all over the world who have just stayed after their visas have run out also have children, friends, and jobs. Obama has relatives in that group. All are coming ahead of those families who have tried to immigrate legally.

His main intention is to make Republicans look bad if they try to undo his illegal actions—all 5 million of them.

Friday Family Photo—1989 at Lakeside—I think

My brother sent a batch of photos I'd sent to my parents, dups or similars, years ago. There's no paint on the new deck in this photo, which is how I'm dating it 25 years ago. There's also about 100 lbs less of us in this photo. Big hair, big shoulder pads. Those were exciting years for us.  It was fun fixing up the cottage to our liking, and taking long week-ends from work.

Sharyl Attkisson

I watched a great interview with Sharyl Attkisson-- explaining how there are campaigns to destroy reporters who don't toe the line, how the government bureaucracy extends from party to party, administration to administration, how there is incestuous relationships between staff of government and media (sometimes siblings, sometimes friends, sometimes lovers). Her new book is "Stonewalled." After 3 years, she's just now getting some of the documents on Fast and Furious she requested when she worked for CBS. The plan, she says, is to draw it out so long that eventually the public loses interest.

I’ve been reading Citizens of London by Lynne Olson, which is about WWII, and although I’m not nearly finished, I see the power of the press and the flesh already and I’m only 50 pages into the story.

Why amnesty now?

Based on new stats from Nevada on Harry Reid's illegals, he no longer needs support from dead voters.
http://theblacksphere.net/2014/11/reid-gives-america-one-last-thrust/

Obama says he taught constitutional law

What Obama plans for illegals is illegal for presidents to do. It's not "just" an executive order. He himself noted 22 times (that is on record) that what he wants to do is illegal.

I also don't agree with him and all the talking heads that our immigration system is totally "broken." You can't break what you don't use. Illegals ignore the law, ICE ignores it, presidents ignore it, politicians at all levels ignore it, unions and corporations ignore it. Why would a new or revised version be any different if the intention is open borders, more Democrats and more low wage workers?

There are many who want immigration reform--legally--but not what Obama gleefully announced. Why is Obama trying to deep 6 his party?

In 2008:

"Senator Obama received a mandate from the voters to fix our ailing economy, which has shed more than a million jobs so far this year, not to enact a massive amnesty," said Dan Stein, president of FAIR, in a FAIR news release. "Voter turn-out increased across the board as record numbers of all Americans expressed dissatisfaction with the direction of the country. Immigration policy was clearly not a decisive factor in the presidential election, as it was not discussed during the campaign, and the records of both candidates were nearly identical."

Sixty percent of respondents said tougher enforcement and a crackdown on employers who hire undocumented workers was important to them. Only 21 percent supported a legal path to citizenship for illegals.

Fifty-seven percent said that amnesty would hurt American workers, while only 26 percent said that amnesty would aid economic recovery.

King Obama

BREAKING NEWS: President Obama is announcing his executive order on immigration, Thursday. Tonight, he's having a dinner at the White House to explain to lawmakers. No Republicans invited.

http://townhall.com/tipsheet/danieldoherty/2014/11/19/confirmed-amnesty-executive-order-to-be-annouced-thursday-in-prime-time-address-n1921063

And don’t add the drivel that Reagan and Bush violated the law in the same way.  They didn’t.  Do your homework. Obama appears to not only be shredding the Constitution, but the careers of many Democrats at the same time.  It’s his policies that lost the party the Senate; and he could very well be trying to deep six 2016 for them. There are many supporters of immigration reform in both parties.  No one, out side of his lackies and the media, support this. Is he blind to how unpopular his policies and leadership are?  Even with Democrats?

Fighting for us?

Young Americans for Liberty's photo.

The Haircut

One day a florist goes to a barber for a haircut. After the cut he asked about his bill and the barber replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased and left the shop. When the barber goes to open his shop the next morning there is a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The cop is happy and leaves the shop. The next morning when the barber goes to open up there is a 'thank you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Later that day, a college professor comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The professor is very happy and leaves the shop. The next morning when the barber opens his shop, there is a 'thank you' card and a dozen different books, such as 'How to Improve Your Business' and 'Becoming More Successful.'

Then, a Congressman comes in for a haircut, and when he goes to pay his bill the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The Congressman is very happy and leaves the shop. The next morning when the barber goes to open up, there are two dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the members of our Congress.

Korean American describes life for a Christian on college campus

Ellice Young Eun Park: "I went to a school in the Bay Area where the dominant belief was atheism, agnosticism, and Buddhist - and Hindu-informed culture. The hatred towards Christianity and Christians was pretty hot, I have no problem saying this to anyone. They're not radical militants, but they're cool, interesting, and academically super intelligent people. Some are very sweet, and funny. Hatred towards Christians comes wrapped in many faces.

My first week there! I was told, "This school knocks the Christian beliefs out of you. Most people here who start out Christian become atheists or agnostics by the time they graduate." I stared that person square in the eye and asked, "oh yeah? That isn't happening to me, not by anyone here." They looked at me and said, "I guess we will see, but my bet is it will get to you too." Sure enough, I sat in a biology class where the teachers main knock off joke was to mock Jesus, mock the existence of a Christian deity, and mock Christians. They didn't knock my faith out, but they fired me up after being in the comforts of the lca bubble. Maybe I should thank them, huh.

Interfaith dialogue is a joke if the main aim is to mock and try to shame someone out of their beliefs, or scare it out of them, or rule it against them. What, so are the Muslims going to fight for America for Americas protection and interests, and be patriotic to the USA after kicking the Christians out of the military--making it a hostile environment for Christian soldiers?

Pray for the Christian friends and family you have. Write a letter, use your voice, stand for your beliefs because nobody else will do it for you. I think we buy into this idea that Christianity is a dominant religion and sit back to see what others do. But the reality is that popular culture loves bashing on Christians, academics celebrate slashing at Christians, millennials are mostly uninterested in Christian belief, and devout Christians are a real minority. Jesus did say that many would call him Lord And did so much for him, but that he would not recognize them. Let's at least stand for those we love! even if we won't stand for ourselves.

Josh Mandel is still the youngest State Treasurer in America

He won 82 of Ohio's 88 counties in the 2014 election, including traditional Democratic strongholds of Lorain, Jefferson and Trumbull. In fact, Josh won more counties in 2014 than he did in his 2010 election over the incumbent.‎

His 14-point win was the largest margin of victory for any incumbent Ohio Treasurer in a quarter of a century.‎ This is despite his opponent spending over $3 million against him and the unions doing additional independent expenditures.

He beat his opponent in her home county, her own statehouse district that she currently represents, and even her own precinct. Barack Obama won Hamilton County in 2008 and 2012.‎‎‎‎

Seeing blacks as victims does them great harm—Thomas Sowell

“Under an implicit threat of losing their federal subsidies, the Minneapolis Public Schools have agreed to reduce the disparity in punishment of black students by 25 percent by the end of this school year, and then by 50 percent, 75 percent and finally 100 percent in each of the following years. In other words, there are now racial quota limits for punishment in the Minneapolis schools.

If we stop and think -- as old-fashioned as that may seem -- there is not the slightest reason to expect black males to commit the same number of offenses as Asian females or any other set of students.

When different groups of human beings have behaved differently in all sorts of ways, in countries around the world, for thousands of years of recorded history, why would we accept as dogma that the only reason one set of students gets punished more than others is because the people who are doing the punishing are picking on them?

Politically -- which is the way the Obama administration looks at everything -- any time they can depict blacks as victims, and depict themselves as their rescuers, that means an opportunity to get out the black vote for Democrats.

On the surface, this may look like a favor to blacks. But only on the surface.

Anyone with common sense knows that letting a kid get away with bad behavior is an open invitation to worse behavior in the future. Punishing a kid for misbehavior in school when he is 10 years old may reduce the chances that he will have to be sent to prison when he is 20 years old.”

Now 2 people have died from Ebola in the U.S., 12 from EV-D68

TB is a much more serious disease than Ebola, accounting for 1.3 million deaths worldwide. In 2010, foreign-born persons accounted for 60% of all TB cases diagnosed in the United States, as compared to 47% of all TB cases in 2000. The number of states with at least 50% of TB cases occurring among foreign-born persons has increased from 21 states in 2000 to 33 states and the District of Columbia in 2010. The TB case rate was 1.2 per 100,000 for U.S.-born persons and 15.6 for foreign-born persons, and Asians have the highest rate of all groups in the U.S. Foreign-born Hispanics and Asians together represented 79% of TB cases in foreign-born persons, and accounted for 51% of the national case total. From 2009 through 2013, the top five countries of origin of foreign-born persons with TB were Mexico, the Philippines, India, Vietnam and China   (CDC)

As we fret over one more death from Ebola in the U.S., there have been 9,000 from CRE, Carbapenem-resistant Enterobasteriaceae. It's highly lethal for the elderly, debilitated, and children with critical illnesses. There are guidelines to reduce its transmission in hospitals, but few have adopted them. 94% of the cases are related to health care.

Is popcorn considered “fast food?”

One of the major fall outs from the women's movement of the 1970s was more children eating in restaurants. We rarely eat at "fast food" places, but all restaurants where we do eat have a lot of children. It's a lot cheaper and healthier to feed them at home. With the money you save, hire a sitter and go out without them. http://archpedi.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx…

November 15th – We’ve done many posts on the low info voters who elected O twice. But Obamacare architect Jonathan Gruber thinks American voters are just stupid. Big difference! Low info voters are the result of public schools that don’t teach civics, lib colleges that won’t allow conservatives to teach or even speak, a pop culture that deifies morons and a biased media that even now remains mostly mum on the Gruber videos. So being a low info voter has little to do with IQ, but rather with a ubiquitous and deep-rooted liberal establishment that knows a less-informed electorate is a more government-dependent electorate. In a wonderfully ironic way Jonathan Gruber could be seen as an American hero. His videos inadvertently exposed the rampant corruption within: a) the Obama administration b) Obamacare & c) the mainstream media As a MIT economics professor, Gruber has “educated” how many? Hundreds? On the other hand this pompous putz has just educated TENS OF MILLIONS on the total fraud that is modern liberalism! P

How government benefits hurt the poor in the long run

Minimum wage increases will affect only about 1% of American workers.  This is a political club, not a help for workers. The problem is unemployment, lack of skills, under the table pay, low education levels, but Democrats say changing things for 1% will give those families a great benefit.  Not as long as it pays better to receive government benefits if you don't or can't work: if you would lose your Medicaid if you accepted a raise, why would you try to advance? If you had to move out of Section 8 housing if you got a promotion and the pay wouldn't cover the new apartment, would you?

 http://news.yahoo.com/welfare-pays-more-entry-level-shocking-number-states-144812704.html

The authors found that in 11 states, “welfare pays more than the average pretax first-year wage for a teacher [in those states]. In 39 states, it pays more than the starting wage for a secretary. And, in the three most generous states a person on welfare can take home more money than an entry-level computer programmer.”

STEM Women

I've seen stupid stories about women, but this beats all. Feminists got their naked lady tattoos in a knot over this guy's shirt and ignored the science. Now that should help the camaraderie in the lab.

"At first, people were excited. Then some women noticed that one of the space scientists, Matt Taylor, was wearing a shirt, made for him by a female "close pal," featuring comic-book depictions of semi-naked women."

It became a bigger story than Kim Kardashian's naked butt, which as far as I could tell had no scientific merit. Women can wear anything they want or nothing at all, all in an effort to attract men, but by golly, men better stay covered in something gender neutral and pretend they don’t care about what women look like—not even cartoonish women.

Comment on Democrat voters, Michael Petrino

“The Republicans are deceiving themselves if they think Democrats, or those who vote for them, are disturbed by the fact that Gruber is a liar and a simpleton, or that Obamacare will ultimately bring them great pain. Honesty and integrity are characteristics that are not highly valued by Democrat voters. If they were highly valued, Hillary would not be the leading contender for the Democrat nomination in 2016. Ted Kennedy would not have been returned to office over and over again after he killed Mary Jo. Bill Clinton would not be revered after the no lo plea and the statements by a number of women that he assaulted them. Barney Frank would not have been reelected many times after it was discovered that a prostitution ring was being run out of his apartment by his partner. Charlie Rangel would not have been reelected after he was found to have engaged in violations of the tax code. Democrats just do not care; they want politicians who can be relied upon to give them "free" stuff.”

This comment was made at the article about how Gruber and CBO cooked the books on Obamacare.

Obama and amnesty

Why does Obama believe Hispanics need an extra push from Washington?Their college enrollment increased 15% in 2011, and their high school drop out rate is very low. Hispanic families value education and marriage.  Black enrollment in college decreased during the same time 3% and many households are held back economically due to lack of marriage.  Maybe unions and the Chamber are anticipating cheap labor with amnesty, but let's look down the road a few years as these stats translate to graduate school, and white collar jobs. (Pew Report Hispanic College Enrollment, 2012)

How to become a millionaire selling Obamacare

Jonathan Gruber raked in a tidy sum "selling" Obamacare to adoring Democrat audiences who heard about the "stupidity" of American voters who would swallow the poison only with a teaspoon of lies. In the bill there was money to promote it; it went to states in the form of grants, and he was hired by 8-10 states (known at this time) at $300-$400,000 a pop. And Nancy Pelosi who claimed she didn't know him, is in the archives lauding his wisdom and position. The O Team is a piece of work.

Charitable giving

Jesus preaches and teaches more on money than any other topic. Liberal Christians will remind you, if you forget. However, he never asks believers/followers to take money from others and pretend it's their own generosity. Nor does he ever suggest they ask Rome to respond to their responsibilities. Nor does he ever promise you will end poverty or change lives if you give--except maybe your own. Although Americans are the most generous in the world--giving to charity more than the GDP of some prosperous countries--the lowest income and least educated Americans (bottom fifth) give beyond their capacity. The wealthiest give proportionately the least. Giving helps your health, your happiness and even your looks! The giving season is coming--don't be stingy. http://online.wsj.com/…/SB100014240527023043374045792143334

Fried Cabbage with sausage

I love fried cabbage.  I like to buy shredded/chopped cabbage and just toss some in the skillet for lunch. You don’t need this much butter, but it’s in the recipe. Or use olive oil.

FRIED CABBAGE WITH SAUSAGE

1 stick butter or margarine
1 small head of cabbage, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
1 pound smoked sausage, sliced into round pieces (I use turkey)
1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes or rotel tomatoes
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper

Melt butter in large skillet. Add cabbage, onion, and cook on medium high for about 5 minutes stirring to keep from sticking to pan. Add remaining ingredients, cover and simmer for 20 – 25 minutes.
Makes about 8 servings. Only 4 g net carbs per serving.

Life expectancy at 75, or why are Hispanics living longer?

Bobs & Rick 2

Bob senior (b. 1913) and sons shortly before his death at 93.

Life expectancy is usually given for birth year, but you can also figure it from current age. Hispanics in the U.S. have the highest life expectancy, then white non-Hispanic, then black non-Hispanic. This applies at birth and ages 65 and 75. So something other than income and government benefits is at work. Those in the upper ranges are all pre-War on Poverty and pre-126 wealth transfer programs. Based on the CDC figures, I think I’ll go with my Mom and Dad’s ages—88 and 89. My two grandfathers were around 93.  My husband’s father was 93.

"Hispanic" is a made up word to refer to people whose families come from a Spanish speaking country--Cuba, Mexico, South America (not sure if Brazilians are called Hispanic), etc. Generally, they are of European ancestry with a mix of Indian.

Divorce rates are lower; marriage rates are higher for Hispanic households. Hispanics are less likely to co-habit. Living together without marriage does not provide the health and wealth benefits of marriage. If it is an inter-ethnic marriage, those figures hold. Hispanic families are more likely to attend church than other groups. All these factors affect health (and wealth). However, more education = higher divorce rate. Since 2001 the largest minority in the U.S. population, Hispanics now have the highest college enrollment rate for freshmen since 2012, Will we see a lower life expectancy as they take on the culture of the majority?

Today I did go

I agree with this...

Today I visited Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio, with the Conestoga group. Many famous people await the resurrection here, many species of trees, wonderful sculptures, and hundreds of stories (about 147,000) known only to the families. I'd driven past it for 47 years, and finally visited.  The average temperature this time of year is usually 55, but it was 31, and we were pretty cold.  The Docent did a wonderful job.  I hope to go again when the weather is nice.  Three OSU presidents, Edward Orton, William Oxley Thompson, and George W. Rightmire are buried there and five Ohio governors.   Also, Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, famous WWI pilot.  Samuel P. Bush, grandfather and great grandfather of Bush 41 and 43 is also there. There are over 150 species of trees, and it’s a favorite spot for migratory birds.

Why the media blackout on Gruber? Silly question.

“Kirsten Powers [Democrat and liberal reporter for Fox] called out the mainstream media for ignoring several new videos that show one of the architects of ObamaCare admitting the administration was not transparent about what was in the bill back in 2009 and 2010.

Jonathan Gruber said that the “stupidity of the American voter” helped ObamaCare become law, acknowledging that the administration could not be forthcoming about taxes in the bill.

He said the administration exploited the lack of understanding of the average American.

The White House had not commented until today when Ed Henry pressed Josh Earnest on Gruber's admissions.

Powers said she can't understand why media outlets like The New York Times would not think this is worthy of coverage.”

Required pre-school?

Our federal government has done such an amazing job on k-12 education and in containing costs for college (the cost of higher education has surged more than 500 percent since 1985), that now it wants to require pre-kindergarten education--even though its own program for the poor and low income (Head Start) shows no advantage--just so it can complete the job of state thought control.
